So yesterday, 17 years removed from my last speeding ticket, I received another one. A whopper at $236, to boot!
Anyways, I seem to recollect that a generation ago, you could go and plead guilty to the person at the cage at Rocky Mountain Plaza , look sincere and sad , tell them that it was going to cause you financial hardship and maybe no winter boots for little Johnny....if they bought it, they reduced the ticket amount and gave you another 6 weeks to pay.
My question....Does this still happen or am I s.o.l.?

Just go on the court date and they will usually knock a point or two off and take some money off as well. (Did that 4 years ago)

Go and just plead guilty? Or is a sob or something else involved?
Thanks!

About a 2 years ago I got a ticket and went down to Rocky Mountain Plaza to go through the process. About 2 hours later, I met with the guy who offered me two options:
1) pay the whole ticket of $125 and get no demerits
-or-
2) pay $75 and get 2 demerits.
Originally, I had been dinged for $125 and 3 demerits (going 20 clicks over)
I personally didn't plead guilty or anything, I just said that I was a poor student....Hope this helps.
Oh yeah, whatever option I chose, the guy mentioned that I'd have to pay right away. The total time it took was about 2.5 hours.

Go to the crown prosecutor and strike a deal.
AlbertGQ, multinova has no demerits, and it took a picture of you while speeding and used a speed sensing device to tell you by how much. Just pay the damn ticket, its hard to argue against computers.

I know it has no demerits. The ticket was for $156. I used to get them on a different type of ticket. This one came in a carbon canary copy (it looks like a regular ticket). I figured there might be somethign I could do

What colour is the ticket?
If its a white piece of paper with a crappy looking picture of your plate along with speed/fine etc thats normal. Otherwise, if its yellow, you should go talk to the crown.
In my opinion, if its a regular photo ticket its not worth the hours of waiting for the minimal discount you'll get. If you're bored, go for it. Just phone and make sure the process is the same.
Oh, and for the first person in this thread, phone and make sure the ticket is at the office before you go down.

I've had the crappy white sheet with my photo on it. this one is the yellow carbon copy. I think I will go try to reduce the fine. I am cheap that way

I've played the poor broke student card too. I got myself one of those "rolling a stop sign tickets" (which was a pretty sketchy call, IMO) and it was worth like, $285. I ended up paying less than half and getting no demerits.
From what I've heard they are pretty good about stuff like this. I think it's strange though, that they will take the demerits off as long as you pay something. You would think that if it's about getting bad drivers off the road they would make you keep the demerits but not pay...

Exact same thing happen to me, just went to the Crown. Was the second person in line so that no one p*ssed him off. Played the poor student card and got it knocked down.
Only thing I can tell you is go SUPER early and stand in line, be close to the front. Some of those people p*ss the Crown off pretty bad, not quite sure how.

Ninety percent of traffic tickets are about collecting money [taxes] and have nothing to do with safety. Take a good look around and you will see some terrible drivers who never get a ticket and the cops never bother them because it is much easier to hide and nail drivers at easy picking spots. I used to get angry when I got ticketed but now I just try and accept it as another tax and try to get the fine and points reduced as much as possible. A good attitude also never hurts when dealing with cops and prosecuters.

I've done this several times this year. Go to Rocky Mountain Plaza around 7:45. Line up outside the place and wait for it to open. When it does, go to the wickets and speak to a JP. Tell them you would like to speak with a First Appearance Crown. They'll take your info and tell you to have a seat. Go have a coffee. It'll be a while before the FAC start taking clients. It works on a first come, first served basis so that's why you showed up early (otherwise you could be there for hours). When the FAC calls your name, take a seat in the little room.
Be polite and plead your case. The FAC's are mandated to try and get a guilty plea to reduce court costs so they'll make a deal if they can. If you are concerned about demerits you can often swing a deal to make the ticket a "registered owner" ticket. The fine will be about the same but there won't be any demerits. Usually it won't affect your insurance either. If you're mostly concerned with the amount of the fine, then talk about little Johnny's boots. It helps if you can say you are a poor student too.
The FAC will make a proposal. He'll write it on a little slip of paper. Next you'll wait until another person, a JP, calls your name. You talk to her about time to pay and verifying the details of the proposal. You can accept the deal right there or ask for some time to think about it.
|
Yup, that's exactly how it works. Also note that the FAC will not take off all of your demerits if the original demerits on the ticket is 4 points or above (usually speeding over 30kph), he will only give you half off the fine and half off the points. Average total time in & out is about 2.5-3 hours depends on the day of the week (Mon-Fri only).
You also don't have to go yourself if you can find someone (anyone, family/friends/ticket agent/lawyer etc.) to go for you as your agent. I do this for people sometimes, see my thread in the "CP Power Ring" forum.

The one thing that p*sses me off about this process is that demerit points should be non-negotiable.
If you are convicted of the offense, you lose the points, period. The entire point of demerit points is to get the habitually bad drivers off the road. If prosecutors are willing to reduce them, then the entire system is worthless.

i am also now the latest victim of the taxation/speeding ticket program BUT the police officer did not put my postal code which is clearly stated on my license on the ticket, now i have heard that if they do not fill out all fields on the ticket properly that it is considered null and void, will they consider that null and void with out my postal code on it or am i just hoping too much

So it is a money grab. The person broke the areas traffic code, and in a society based around money, this is a punishment. While it does act as a money grab, at the same time it also acts as a punishment.
Myself personally I have never gotten a speeding ticket, or anything of the like. The flow of traffic is good enough for myself. The three/four minutes I might save isn't really worth the possibility of getting into an accident, or something of the likeoccuring.
