Default Suggest a Router

So lately I've been having problems with my Linksys router. My devices consistently cannot connect to wireless or the router needs to be power cycled in order to get devices to connect. It's not very old, I have updated the firmware and messed with the settings as much as I can. Not sure what else to do. I'm thinking of maybe just buying a new router.

Basically we have two computers in the same room directly connected into the router. I have a netbook I use wireless for, as well as a wireless printer, Apple TV and we have several smartphones. I'm looking for a router that I don't have to power cycle on a daily basis to get my devices to connect via wireless. I'm also of course not looking to spend a fortune and don't need any additional features. Like less than $100 if possible.

Suggestions for good routers?

This is what I recommend:

Go with the 3700 if you want dualband...but then you are over $100.

Have you considered re-installing an older version of the firmware? Those updates seem to break as many things as they fix. My Linksys was giving me a devil of a time with media streaming to my Xbox360 and after I tried every troubleshooting tip I could find, a firmware downgrade did the trick. Haven't had a hiccup since. Just another thought.

I've heard lots of positive recommendations for Buffalo networking products in the past, but I don't know it its legal issues are behind it.

I don't know anything about routers, but I was thinking of getting this one...Any opinions on it?

I hadn't done any firmware updates for quite some time and only recently did. The problem appears the same with the old setup as well as with the new firmware. Doesn't seem to make a difference.

Fair enough. Another thing I've read that can help prevent the network from dropping out is to change the beacon interval in the settings.

Out of curiosity, what model number is your Linksys and what firmware are you using?

Yeah I've got a 3700 and am pretty happy with it.

Don't have access to it right now, at work. Latest firmware though from the Linksys site.

Edit, think it is the BEFW11S4 if I remember correctly.

^^

For those with the 3700, what's the deal with dualband? Something I need? Edit: nm, I read up on it. Might be worth the $129 to get the 3700.

The firmware that crippled me was from the Linksys site too.

But it was happening before the firmware update. I did the update because I thought that would be the first step in trying to fix the issue.

I had issues with my linksys WRT54G. Same thing with having to power cycle the router far too often, wireless dropping far too often.

Glad it's not just me. Drives me insane having to power cycle the damn thing all the time.

I have a WNDR3700 and with DD-WRT firmware, it's amazing. There's also the Buffalo WZR-HP-AG300H I also own. Both are rated really high in terms of range and load performance on small network builder. Check them out.

he WNDR3700 refurb is on sale for $60 if you have an Amerifriend to reship to you. Amazing deal on a router I spent almost twice the amount on http://www.ebay.ca/itm/310341935825?...ht_2939wt_1185

No Amerifriend...

I'll most likely pick one up at Memory Express at the end of the month.

Absolutely get a dual band. In my neighbourhood it's the difference between a sustained 20mbps and a sustained 90mpbs.

Does the 3700 maintain two separate networks for the 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz connected devices, or do they all seamlessly join the same network?

Which of these two would be better?

Or are they both garbage?

I'm not sure about this, but the SSIDs are different between 2.4 and 5 by default... That means they maintain two different networks right? Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Cheapest current prices in Canada that I could find the WNDR3700. WNDR3800 is out now, but substantially more expensive at minimal performance increase. Reviews at smallnetbuilder
http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/

Netgear WNDR3700 @ $109 (recommend pricematching at MemEx)
http://www.ncix.com/products/index.p...r&promoid=1055

Buffalo WZR-HP-AG300H $99
