Calgary Stampede ranked 5th in the world for party spots
At least according to this list...
http://www.cnngo.com/explorations/pl...03515?page=0,0
Quote:
5. The Calgary Stampede, Canada
Beer, brawl and brawn.
The Calgary Stampede, the world’s largest rodeo, draws an estimated 250,000 wannabe cowgirls and cowboys looking to drink beer, yell yee-haw and soak up the Wild West lifestyle. Activities include bull riding, barrel racing, steer wrestling, tie-down roping and chuck wagon racing and shots of Jägermeister. Next year’s event (July 6-15, 2012) marks the Stampede’s 100th anniversary so giddyap! (+1 800 2610 1010)
|
I've been to 3 other places on that list and I find it hard to believe the stampede is on par with those other ones...but different strokes I guess...

I think it has to do with the tourist effect. I'm sure if you actually lived in Ibiza or New Orleans, their events would seem less exotic. You have to admit though, how many other cities of one million people or over, pretty much shut down and party for 10 days straight?
Think about it, in other places people have Cowboy themed house parties, and also dress up Western for Halloween. My guess is way less people do that outside of the 10 days in the summer in Calgary because it's rather redundant.

250,000 fake people for 10 days, opposed to every club being full of fake people in this city the rest of the year.

I was wondering how long it would take TTC to rain on the parade.

I think that's the biggest thing that gets lost on Calgarians. But there isn't a single event in North America that literally shuts down a major cities' biggest employer for 10 days of partying. You know where companies hold their own parties and encourage the cowboy behavior. There's nothing remotely comparable to it in cities like LA, New York, London, San Fransisco, Tokyo, etc.,
Yes, it can be somewhat annoying as a Calgarian, but it's a pretty unique event and visitors from all over the world love it.

my employer lets me wear jeans for a week, sends me invites to all these company parties to get free food and booze, and gives me a paid day off to get plastered on the company's dime. i really don't care about the rest of Stampede, that right there makes it awesome

I can just imagine someone from Florida reading that and thinking "I get to wrestle steer?"
Also, they forgot the national ski team's favourite event: getting caught on a party bus and grinding your ass right down to the tail bone.

I don't work in O&G. This year, we were officially allowed a couple hours off work to attend the pancake breakfast next door. That's it for the Stampede festivities for us, that's all. We also don't get five digit bonus cheques, stock options, or every second Friday off. I know it's petty jealousy, but I really, really hate you guys.

Oh don't worry the commodity cycle will gear down eventually and a bunch of us will get laid off and those that remain will have to work the same 6 day work week as you, not get bonuses, and all our options will die out of the money. But for now weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!

The only other thing I can compare the stampede to is Oktoberfest in Munich.
Got to love 2 weeks dedicated to beer!

A proper Bucket List would include:
Oktoberfest - Munich
Carnival - Rio
Carnival - Koln
Running of the Bulls - Pamplona
Halloween Parade - NY or SF
Love Parade - Berlin
Stampede - Calgary
Jazz Festival - Montreal
Mardi Gras - New Orleans
New Years Eve - Quito

This is a fantastic recognition of Calgary's tremendous atmosphere, particularly during those ten days in July. The Calgary Stampede is one of the main reasons I moved here and it is the highlight of my summer.
Congratulations to all the Calgarians here who make this such an amazing place to live, work and yes, party!

I have no idea how Marquee from Vegas is #2 on that list. I was there 4 weeks ago and it was ok....definately not great.
Vegas in general deserves to be on that list but not Marquee.

For some reason I hated the idea of ending up in O&G when I'm finished school. Not so much anymore.
