Default Any tips to improve wifi speed around the house?

My speed is great downstairs (where the router is - 21 Mbps), but as soon as I go upstairs it drops pretty significantly. Yesterday it was fine (~15 Mbps upstairs) but today it's down around 2 or 3 Mbps, not good enough for streaming through Apple TV.

Any tips to improve speed around the house?

Add a dual channel router, so your apple TV can have its own band.

Take as many devices off it as possible, and hard wire them.

Verify you are on the optimum channel for the surrounding area. Even if you have done it once, do it again.

Add a Wireless Access point upstairs.

How are you determining that throughput? Something like speedtest.net?

What Rathji said. I have a dual band and it smokes on my only dual band supporting device, my iPad 2. However for your single band devices, Use this free browser app to see what channel your neighbors are using:

http://tools.meraki.com/stumbler

My neighbors were all on 6 or 11. So I set mine to channel 1. Major improvement.

The problem with having a router auto select the channel, is that they almost always set to 6 or 11 until there is way too much interference.

Manually setting the channel may require you to change it now and again, but it is worth it IMO.

I think it is worth at least a test to cycle through the channels, and retest download speeds.

I'm out of thanks from the Wannamaker thread, but thanks. I'll try a few of these ideas today and see if I can fix the problem.
