Premium Gas for Regular Price in Chestermere
Don't know if it's own thread worthy but Petro Canada in Chestermere is out of Regular and offering Premium for $1.09/L. There is a few CP'ers out here who can cash in.

So, how do those consumers measure up?

Sometimes I wish I had a drum with a hand pump in the garage. Although the cost of the pump and barrel would negate any savings.

Way to pick out a typo by the OP and then spell gouging wrong.

Just curious, but what does the octane rating of premium tend to be in Calgary? 91 or 93?

91 - you can only get 94 at some Huskies, though I noticed Husky removed/lowered the ethanol from their lower tier gas and are thus back to 87 instead of 89 low grade (at least in the SW)

91 on average, you can get ethanol 94 from Husky that gets poor mileage.

that's a bit of a misnomer - yes ethanol gas gets you worse mileage, but if you read the fine print on most pumps in this city, they all say "may contain up to 10% ethanol" - So in reality you're just as likely to get the ethanol blended gas at Esso as at Husky, it's just that Husky advertised it for so long we associate ethanol blended gas with them.
Ethanol has ~67% the speific energy as the same volume of gas, so 33% worse fuel economy, all things equal. however since we're talking a 10% blend, that.;s ~3%, which isn't that much, and equals out (back when) you got 91 for the price of 87 at Husky (assuming your car needs 91).
So the savings of 'cheap premium' at Husky is slightly offset by the slightly worse mileage.
This of course is no longer true now that it appears Husky is a 'normal' gas station and doesn't have more/less ethanol then the other stations .

Hmm, that's a little disappointing (not a fan of ethanol at any grade). Higher altitude and relatively low octane doesn't bode well for getting the most performance out of a nice car.

94 is 10% ethanol and the rest of their grades are a little less. It makes a noticable difference in my car, I'd say almost 10%. I like the sweet smell of it, but really its inferior fuel when compared with Shell V-Power which is only 5% ethanol and comes from the most modern refinery in Canada.

Actually, you're got that wrong. High altitude means you can use a lower octane. All an octane rating means to us, in reality, is that the gas is less sensitive to pre-detention. At a higher elevation, you have less oxygen, thus a lower chance of pre-det - therefore higher octane is less important the higher you go. This is why some places in high-alt Colorado sell 85 and 83 grade.
The only time this is not true is in turbo charging, as the turbo spins faster to cram more air in and compensates for the altitude, thus it requires the same octane regardless of altitude.

I agree, that was what I was trying to get at - the low-grade Husky is the same 5% as Shell - now if you like Shell's additives versus another, I can totally get that.

The additives make a difference, but the biggest thing is the way the oilsands feedstock is processed at Shell's refinery. Their diesel is also superior because the hydrotreating process they use at the Scotford refinery.

Good to know. As far as I always knew, you get worse performance from an engine the higher up you go. Not necessarily octane related of course.

So assuming Shell is the best, how would you rank the other bigger brands?
