Sept 28th in WW2
Sep 28, 1938 - Chamberlain repudiated the foreign ministry statement of the previous day, saying, “We cannot in all circumstances undertake to involve the whole British Empire in war simlpy on [Czechoslovakia's] account.”
Sep 28, 1938 - Chamberlain proposed to Hitler a conference involving Czechoslovakia, France, Italy, Germany, and Britain, saying “I cannot believe that you will take responsibility of starting a world war which may end civilization for the sake of a few days’ delay in settling thsi long-standing problem.”
Sep 28, 1939 - Poland is partitioned between Nazi Germany and Soviet Russia.
Sep 28, 1941 – Sep 29, 1941 – SS troops massacred nearly 34,000 Jews from the Kiev area in the nearby Babi Yar ravine. In its official report, Einsatzgruppe C related: “The Jewish population was invited by poster to present themselves for resettlement. Although initially we had only counted on 5,000-6,000 Jews reporting, more than 30,000 Jews appeared; by a remarkably efficient piece of organization they were led to believe in the resettlement story until shortly before their execution.” It had been suggested the Jews were killed in reprisal for the bombing of a Kiev hotel used as a German headquarters, but the SS had been systematically killing Jews in Russia in the wake of the advancing Wehrmacht. Babi Yar stands as perhaps the most horrible single example of vengeful genocide.
Sep 28, 1944 - Canadian 3rd ivision troops fought their way into Calais.
For good measure
September 29, 1938 Germany, Britain, France, and Italy sign the Munich Pact allowing Germany to invade the Sudeten territories of Czechoslovakia.

Reading the quotes and different events reminds me of high school and social studies. Really enjoyed that class, history of the world country and so forth. At that time I liked learning about, just hated the fact it was school and we got tested and quizzed on it. Appreciate it more now, the stuff you learn then sticks with you forever.

What a horrible time in human history. The atrocities of WWII are unthinkable to many of us, but this kind of BS genocide continues to go on and on in many dark places of the earth.

The SS was truly the most frightening of the frightening. The regular German Army was fairly professional in its conduct in WW 2. Even as Germany was slowly destroyed and the Army was pushed back into Berlin by the Russians, they didn't fully panic.
The SS was another animal, until late in the war when they relaxed the member rules, they were considered to be the race pure best of the German people, they were fanatical, ruthless and completely loyal, they weren't allowed to integrate or mix with the regular German Army. They started fairly small with only 3 divisions, but they eventually grew to 40 divisions and opened their ranks to fanatical Nazi's from conquered nations.
Most of the German War Crimes were committed by the SS, including the mass executions of Canadians by Kurt Meyer.
While the commonly accepted plan was that the SS was to become a racial based police force after the war ended. The more sinister plan was built around Hitler's lack of trust in his own army.
If the German's had won WW2, the SS would have turned on the army, purged the officers ranks, liquidated any non pure gernams in the Army and absorbed the rest into their ranks.

Cool thread, but you could probably do this for all 365 days of the year. There was just so much crazy sh*t going on all over the world in those few years.
