New hole opens in ozone layer
A new hole has formed in the ozone layer, over the arctic, much like the hole over the antarctic.
The hole covered two million square kilometres — about twice the size of Ontario — and allowed high levels of harmful ultraviolet radiation to hit large swaths of northern Canada, Europe and Russia this spring, the 29 scientists say.

This comes at a time when the government is making significant cuts to Environment Canada and it's ozone monitoring department.

ummm you seem to have read a bit more into this article then you should have, this ozone "hole" is not new at all, it's just the ozone depletion this year is more significant then normal, due to a longer colder winter.
*edit* I guess that depends on what the definition of a hole is... carry on

Ermmm, they did say there was arctic ozone loss before, but there are several sentences that suggest there was no 'hole' before
The scientists say the destruction this spring “attained, for the first time, a level clearly identifiable as an Arctic ozone hole.”

If Total Recall taught us anything it's that we CAN dare to dream.

Haha, was just about to agree with you there. Both of us ending up editing at the same time (and then I had to edit back, lol)
But yeah, it's written kinda funny, though that often happens when journalists write about scientific matters.

Yes, cause I'm sure scientists love putting out bad information.
Also, it's the kind of thing that's easily verified by other countries and agencies. There's all sorts of agencies monitoring the hole in the antarctic.

there is nothing wrong with healthy skepticism. If a tobacco company funded research refuting the impact of smoking on lung cancer, we would all be skeptical. Why not here? On the surface there is the potential for conflict of interest.
As for scientists putting out bad information, you have no idea. Being in research for the past 15 years, there is so much crap that gets thru all the checks and balances, peer review and scrutiny.

Everytime I get my haircut my barber points to the top of my head with a mirror and says my ozone layer is getting bigger

Well I guess since there is less ozone to monitor, significant cuts make plenty of sense
