Scarface to be remade
Before you throw up, or curse Universal, it seems like it's not going to be a remake in the conventional sense.
Quote:
This new SCARFACE is not intended to be a remake or a sequel. Instead, it will take the common elements of the first two films: an outsider, an immigrant, barges his way into the criminal establishment in pursuit of a twisted version of the American dream, becoming a kingpin through a campaign of ruthlessness and violent ambition.

This story seems to be on various web sites right now, so it's not like it's this one article. A quick google got me 45 news stories.
Scarface is my all time number one movie and when I saw the headline, I wanted to hurt someone. After digging into the story, my anger was subdued a little bit.
I got no problem with them doing a modern take on this very simple story. I just don't like how it looks like it's going to have the same name. Scarface should remain Pacino and Depalma's. And before you mention the 1930's Scarface, don't bother. When people hear the title Scarface, Pacino comes to mind first. The 80's version is an absolute classic. I'd be shocked if more than 3 percent of movie fans have seen the 30's version.

But what about the 30s ver... oh. Nevermind.
Funny, after reading the recent thread of movie remakes I thought to myself, "I wonder when Scarface is going to be re-imagined..."

I know I will get flamed for this, but I honestly find Scarface (the Pacino version) to be one of the most overrated movies of all time.
I mean it's good, probably very good, but way too many people consider it to be the greatest movie ever made. Just my opinion of course, but I just don't think it's better then movies like Carlito's Way, Donnie Brasco, The Unouchables, Heat, or Goodfellas.
I find myself being forced to watch it constantly whenever buddies are over for poker or whatever, but I just don't think it's that great. Even the Muni version from the 30's is a better film. Heck I bet I could name more then 5 Pacino movies that are better than Scarface (The Godfather, The Godfather Part II, Heat, Serpico, Donnie Brasco, Insomnia, even The Insider, or Glengarry Glen Ross).

I like the 80's one, but if it ends up being Latinos again, just please make it real Latinos, and not white people with bad orange tans.

I would have put Scarface on a list of movies that were untouchable as remakes (even though it was a remake...lol). There are certain films, you simply can't one up, and this is one of them in my opinion. It is a recipe for failure, right out of the gate. In my opinion it isn't Pacino's best work, but the movie as a whole, is just one of those unique, one of a kind sort of films with a life of its own.
It would be on par with trying to remake Airplane! Not in a million bajillion years, could you ever improve on the original.

Very fair comment. It does get a lot of buzz. The cult following behind it is ridiculous and the relationship between hip hop and this movie is a bit much as well. People treat it like it's the best thing to happen to film making in a long time, when it couldn't be farther from the truth.
I said it's my number one movie of all time, but it's my favorite movie of all time. Not what I think is the best. Huge difference.
Scarface was panned by critics like crazy when it came out. It's far from a flawless movie.
I love Scarface because it's infinitely quotable(see tags, my favorite line), Tony Montana is an awesome character, Pacino did a hell of a job, the story is simple, but effective, the dialogue is real, the music, the tone, etc, I could go on and on. I love this movie. But I understand your overrated comment. I just don't agree with it.

To be fair, Tony Montana was Cuban and Cuba is very much a multiracial country. There are white Cubans, black Cubans and everything inbetween. It's not like Mexico where there is a large portion of the population with an Amerindian background (although Mexico is multiracial as well).

I tend to agree. It's still a good movie, but compared to its reputation, it comes nowhere close in the enjoyment factor a movie like Goodfellas brings.

Scarface is good but overrated. (pause for breath)
It doesn't deserve to be mentioned in the same breath as Goodfellas.
Carlito's Way is underrated. I think it's almost or just as good as Scarface.
and if you haven't seen Blood in Blood Out: Bound by Honour..wow. Awesome movie. I can relate to what vanflames fan says about the difference between a movie being the best and a movie being a favourite.
It's not flawless by any means, but god damn is it freaking awesome.

I love how the tags in this thread can be put together to make a quote from the movie. It's like a little puzzle!

Please cast Ashton Kutcher. Why not? Go for broke.

Since the studio wants to taint the 1983 Classic. I agree go all out and make Scarface the remake all it can be...
Tony - David Caruso
Manny - Jason Biggs
Tara Reid - as the coked up polluted Wife
Rose Perez - as Tony's sister
Frank - Has to be Eugene Levy but played as Earl Camembert
Steven Segal - Omar
George Lopez - Salazar

Agreed, Carlito's way is one of my all time favorite gangster movies. From when the mobsters showed up at his nightclub to whack him, and the end, it was probably some of the most tense 20 minutes of film ever. Donnie Brasco was awesome as well. Both those films were unreal.
From a performance standpoint, Pacino was far better in both than Scarface. I think a big part of the appeal of the film is the guy appeal and over the top violence. Most women don't get Sacrface.
If you are picking movies about drug dealers, I would say Blow was actually better.

Montana was convincing enough, I was more refering to characters like Frank Lopez, played by a white, American, red-headed actor, just given an awful orange tan and painfully fake accent. Doesn't grind my gears or anything, I like this movie in all its cheese. I just think 30 years later, you should probably go a little more legit and hire real Latinos for Latino roles. No need to go blackface anymore (or orangeface).

I like it when Scarface is on TV and the profanity is edited out. My favourite line in the movie becomes "you see this? You don't get a scar like that from eating pineapple"
