they say comedians have a very high rate of mental problems. I think I read/heard somewhere that Rodney Dangerfeild suffered from massive depression.
the thing is, comedians look at the world differently, that's how/why they're funny. But it takes a toll on you as you don't look at things in the "normal" way. Often times it steems from rejection, and failure. Not always the big things in life, but little things that just keep happeneing or adding up. When I watch "Just for Laughs" or "Comics" or any of the standup TV shows (heck even some sitcoms) I often wonder how far from the truth they actually are.
What makes a joke funny is the exageration placed on the everyday occurance. If you're good at coming up with exagerations because they actually happen to you, or aren't far from the truth, then well, it's gonna take its toll on your mind.
Going back to Chappelle and what I just stated, one of his routines is him now being known across America and people coming upto him saying "Hey Rick James Bitch!" Then he talked about taking his kids to Disneyland and having people come upto him saying "Hey Rick James Bitch!" he complained that he people were calling him bitch infront of his kids, he made a joke about not doing that. Then he said the straw broke when Mickey Mouse went upto him and said "Hey Rick James Bitch!" I think the line was "I then took a swing at Mickey, his head popped off, can you imagine the look on a hundred people's faces when they found out that Mikey was Mexican"
The routine was funny, I was rolling on the couch laughing. But how far off of reality is it really?
