The New BC Place
Drove in and around BC Place last night for the first time in a month or so and it got me thining, "Wow, this place looks amazing!"
When I first saw the concept drawings for the new roof, I thought it looked ridiculous but I told myself to reserve judgement until I saw the finished product in person. When this thing is lit up and we get some great aerial shots on TSN, it will be pretty damn impressive.
I haven't been inside yet, but from the people that I have talked to that have, it's nothing short of spectacular. The amount of natural light that comes in is huge, so even when the roof is closed, it won't feel like being in the old marshmallow dome. There are new seats all over, new suites, new washrooms, concourse has been renovated, concessions etc. I guess for half a billion dollars, this better be amazing.
The replay screen is the second largest screen in North America, next to the new Cowboys Stadium in Dallas.
I've never been pumped to work a Lions game, but I can't wait to see this place in action on Friday night. From all accounts, BC Place will be state of the art.
Check out videos of the roof opening and the lighting in action in this link. Pretty cool stuff.

So fellow Vancouver CPers, your thoughts? And from those on the outside, your impressions from what you might have seen online or on TV?

And we have McMahon Stadium. Pathetic.
BC Place looks awesome. Nice to see that in 10 years or so, most of the CFL will have new or renovated stadiums.

It won't look so nice after the Grey Cup Riots.
Until then, it looks like the cover to the next Boston or ELO record.

Do we really need a fancy new stadium that gets used 10 times per year?

I agree the lighting and the way the roof opens look awesome. I just am not fond of the spires surrounding the stadium. It looks like a sea urchin with a genetic defect.

Does McMahon get used only 10 times a year? The answer is no.
We need a 21st century stadium with modern amenities, concourses and the ability to host medium to large outdoor events.
The fact that as a City of 1M+ we don't have a building like this, is an embarrassment.

The answer is no? Are you counting events that draw a few hundred people? Otherwise I don't see where you come up with that answer. The Dinos don't need a new stadium, nor do the Colts or any other team that plays out of McMahon. It could use a renovation, but there's no way that Calgary needs a fancy outdoor stadium. What large outdoor events would we be adding to the slate?

The answer is yes. The 10 or so Stamps home games are the only time there are any fans in the stadium. Sure, it gets used for the Dinos and and amateur football, but the stadium is empty on those occasions.
Outdoor concerts are not allowed at McMahon.
