From what I quickly read on the SK subreddit, seems like there are a bunch of corruption/impeachment charges towards the current president, the opposition refuses to work with him, and this is an attempt to hold onto power...?

Yoon said the decision was made to remove pro-North Korea forces from the country and to protect the liberal constitutional order.
Yoon said he had no choice but to resort to martial law, but did not say in the address what specific measures will be taken.

Yoon Suk Yeol has been South Korea's president since 2022.
He's part of the People Power Party and won the presidential election by narrowly defeating his opponent, Lee Jae-myung, by just 0.7 percentage points. This was the closest election since South Korea started direct elections in 1987.
The president has faced low approval ratings due to various controversies and scandals, including those involving his wife, such as alleged stock manipulation and allegedly accepting a luxury Dior handbag. Last month, Yoon apologised, saying his wife should have conducted herself better.

Oh come on now...if everyone got all up in arms about corruption and whatnot from Politicians then Trudeau would be hanging from the flag-pole on Parliament Hill!
Theres gotta be more to it than that.

If you thought this season would have a happy ending, you haven't been paying attention.
I know Hollywood is barren and devoid of creativity but inciting a Second Korean War just to re-boot MASH over a purse seems like its just going too far.

I was in Korea recently, and several people (Thanks!!!!!) had given me pointers on what to see, customs, common phrases etc.
All of those guides had a general comment around not talking to people about politics. They're kind of private people.
Yet, I got told about the issues with the president by several people randomly while there. I was quite surprised about that and it seemed that people were quite fed up in general. He was the only thing on the news reels there.

Taiwan politics, bar none, is the most entertaining to watch. It'd be like if Trudeau and Polieve had a slap fest regularly, and the Cons and Liberals duked it out in the middle of parliament. I'd tune in regularly for that one.

I read something a few days ago about a citizen being detained for writing a poem where he longed for the reunification of the North and South which is apparently not allowed in South Korea. It was on social media so not sure how true it was. I messaged my friend in Seoul to see what she has to say, but it's 1AM over there so won't hear back until tomorrow.

Yes! Thats what Politics needs.
"You seem to categorically disagree...alright...everyone into the Thunderdome!"
Thats how you engage Voters!
"Did we have to erect the Thunderdome on the lawn of Parliament Hill?"
- You already fought that fight and lost ya bastard! Now fight!

Lawmakers in South Korea have voted to block the martial law decree announced by President Yoon Suk Yeol. 190 lawmakers voted to overturn the measure.
Remains to seen if it happens but under South Korean law the president is obliged to comply with the vote.
