Default NDP to American's don't buy our tar sands

http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/...rticle2236613/

Its obvious that the NDP strategy is to cater to the Quebec vote. But they's suppossed to be a federal party representing all of Canadian interests

Quote:
At a time when the Conservative government and TransCanada Corp. are attempting to salvage a plan to run the Keystone pipeline from Alberta to the Gulf Coast to carry oil-sands crude for processing, Megan Leslie and Claude Gravelle are heading to the U.S. capital to let American politicians know that feelings are mixed on this side of the border.
Why in the hell are these morons going to the States and having promoting counter to the government in place?

Is it bad that I take this very personally? I'm asking honestly. I'm not directly involved in the oil and gas industry, but this feels like betrayal. Is that a legitimate reaction?

They had Nycole Turmel on CTV last night, I didn't care for Jack Layton, but he seemed like a scholar compared to that union muppet.

Maybe its genius, but I see it as wreaking of political inexperience. There are so many angles that it could backfire.

They could get destroyed in the next debate period.

I agree, if some like it and some don't that is fine but these differing opinion are a Canadian issue. We selected a party to represent us and it feels like somebody is going around our choice.

I don't recall but when we were negotiating NAFTA did the NDP go down to Washington and tell them they didn't like the idea? Did any opposition parties go down to Washington in support of the Iraq war despite the governing Liberals saying we don't? When Hillary Clinton goes abroad and declares america's stance does a Republican visit after and say she is wrong?
It is just poor optics and weakens a nations ability to negotiate.

Even pandering to Quebec that is crazy. A lot of materials used during construction are manufactured in Quebec. And there are quite a few big Engineering firms from Quebec that do a lot of work in Alberta. Didn't SNC Lavalin just win a $650 million contract in the oilsands?

But you have no problem when other politicians that you are paying for, head off to Washington to lobby FOR the business deal of a private company?

I want to know Linda Duncan and Brian Mason's response to this.

Not hard to understand, lobbying for something that will help our economy is a totally different beast than trying to sabotage your own country.

This may be consistent with the NDP platform on climate change:

I like to think of it as cleaning up. The stuff is already in the ground seeping and leaching the soil. By removing it, we are just cleaning it up.

this is absurd. There is no longer any reason for anyone in alberta to support this party. None.

Sabotage is your word (and a dramatically false one at that); protecting the environment is how others look at it. And the article clearly states that the NDP don't want to halt development, but rather want more time for an environmental impact assessment.

Read the article before saying stuff like that.

The New Democrats do not want to put a permanent halt to oil-sands development but say the federal government and Alberta should take a timeout to determine how the oil can be extracted with the smallest amount of damage to the environment
That doesn't exactly read "NDP to American's don't buy our tar sands" and it's not like the US is going to stop buying from Canada just because a couple people are bringing forth a different viewpoint.

How many more studies? How many more years? If they NDP had their way they would permanently put this sucker on indefinite hiatus via studies and reports.

If I felt that it was a deal that provided no true gains to our nation then yeah I would not like it. Its not like this is a deal that one company or person benefits from. This is a boost to our economy in which we all get something out of it.

Like I said in another post differing opinions are fine, but we picked who would be our voice outside of Canada already. Democracy has spoken and the people have chosen.
