Well that's SUPPOSED to be the point of a doctor, but alot of doctor's may just be in it for the paycheck and not to help people?

Never heard of doctor's turning people away if they have too many ailments tho, that's just wrong.

No on the kids?
They don't wany potential patients for many years to come?

What happening to the doctor's profession when they turn away people with too many ailments and plan to have kids?

I have freaked out 3 or 4 times at different doctors for over booking patients (are they selling tickets to a rock concert?). It drives me nuts. I have to wait 45-60 minutes. When I make an appointment, I expect them to see me within 5-15 minutes of the original time. (That's reasonable) Not an hour later.

I love wasting my time waiting for those "professionals".

I guess doctors are above and beyond standard business and etiquette practices.

Or could it be that the entire medical system is buckling under it's own weight. Really doctors have to overbook patients because there are just so many of them to book in a day. They can't handle the workload and they are forced to act in a revolving door type of manner.... and that is if you are lucky enough to have a family doctor. Don't get mad at the doctor because your appointment is late, that would be the same as getting mad at the person who is sick because they took to long to be dealt with. It isn't as though doctors deal with a patient for 10 minutes, and then take a half hour break, you can rest assured that they are working their ass off most of the time.

I've learned to always show up late for doctors appointments. Never fails. Instead of waiting an hour, leave 30hr late that way you cut 30 minutes from your wait time

So your the dick that results in all the appointments being pushed back half an hour?

Well the more I think about it the more it seems reasonable you do have lines you have to wait for.

Could just be my doctor, but usually they have 2/3 people in the different rooms. Although I will admit I do have a great family doctor which is a huge plus....

And his name is Glenn Gould how much better a name can someone get

You obviously didn't understand. What's the point in me showing up on time, just to sit there an entire hour?

How about going to physio for whiplash treatment and having to sit in a hard wooden chair for an hour... it ain't fun for the neck/back. My family doctor is usually good with appointment times, so I tend to show up on time for that. But my physio therapist was just brutal with keeping appointments I could show up half an hour late and there would still be people waiting who had appointment times BEFORE mine.

I can tell you why your doctors office is behind on appointment times.

All day long people come in for things that they failed to mention when they made their appointment. They are scheduled for a blood pressure check and follow up on meds. But really they have been having a little chest pain off and on for the last 2 months. So a 15 min appointment becomes a 45 min appointment.

Or little Billy has a sore throat and a runny nose. What do you know little Susie woke up with it this morning too, can we squeeze her in while we are here?

Joe hurt his shoulder last week playing baseball. He makes an appointment for that, but when he gets there, he wants the doc to look at his foot too. It hurts when he runs.

Then there is the guy that had the 2:00 PM appointment, but shows up at 2:30. and expects to get right in. Sorry Jordan, those people go to the bottom of the line. We will see the 2:15, the 2:30 and probably the 2:45 before you.

This happens all day, people never tell that nosey scheduling person what they really want, so they can schedule the right amount of time. Or they feel free to bring along siblings to be seen at the same time, or they just plain ignore the most important medical problem, usually a big one that requires testing and detective work on the part of the medical staff. Instead of scheduling a complete physical, which they need, they schedule a follow up on the blood pressure.

For fotze's question, I have no idea why a doctor would not want to see you wife if she has too many medical problems, unless it is for a high risk pregnancy or something else that the office does not specialize in.

Which clinic was it fotze?

I wonder if its one of the clinics that is (was) experimenting with rosters or capitation based funding - a set fee for looking after X number of patients.

Probably just a workload issue - not saying that's right.

The link below might help. Each docs listing shows whether they are accepting new patients and their conditions, if any.

List of docs

On one hand I sympathize with docs because they are expected to given top notch service at rock bottom prices - with sometimes insane patient expectations to boot.

But, it's a system they are very involved in designing and they are also one of the most resistent to any change.

I know there is a lack of family doctors in Calgary and many of them are closed to new patients due to work load.

Also CMPA insurance is getting harder and more expensive to get, so some doctors want simple patients to help keep their premiums down.

I seem to remember the flames doctors having trouble get CMPA insurance but not exactly sure.

My Grandma had a stroke and 2 heart attacks about 10 years ago, so she doesn't have the greatest balance or speech. She fell about a week ago, and was taken to the emergency and discharged when they found that nothing was broken. She fell 3 more times in the week since that first fall. Her balance, while not being the greatest was good enough for her to not fall, but since that first fall she can't walk on her own anymore. The paramedics came and looked at her once and said nothing is wrong so they won't take her to the hospital. My Grandpa tried to book an appointment for her but her doctor is on holidays and she can't get in until late June. He mentioned that my grandma needs to see a doctor right away and asked for another doctor and was told no, my grandma can only see her own doctor. WTF!?!

I have had several times where my doctor is all booked up or on holidays and I was offered to book with another doctor, I didn't have to ask for it. I know that here in Lethbridge most of the doctors aren't taking new patients because they have a full load, but they take another doctors patients if that doctor isn't able to see them. Needless to say something needs to be done to make health care better.
