World's richest woman says poor should have less fun, work harder
Now there are a couple things to this story which I find hilarious (and piss me off).
Story here.
Quote:
Just in case you were beginning to think rich people were deeply misunderstood and that they feel the pain of those who are less fortunate, here's the world's wealthiest woman, Australian mining tycoon Gina Rinehart, with some helpful advice.
"If you're jealous of those with more money, don't just sit there and complain," she said in a magazine piece. "Do something to make more money yourself -- spend less time drinking or smoking and socialising, and more time working."
|
The funniest thing is she inherited the money. Good for her.
Quote:
Rinehart made her money the old-fashioned way: She inherited it. Her family iron ore prospecting fortune of $30.1 billion makes her Australia's wealthiest person and the richest woman on the planet.
|
Also, beware of clicking the story. She may be the wealthiest, but she is no looker.
P.S. Though if you research a bit more, it seems she inherited millions, then turned it into billions.

There was a lot of media glare around her and her family when I was over there a few months ago - it seems she is cutting the purse strings on her kids and it's ripping their family apart.

Of course she earned her fortune the old fashioned way....she inherited it. Such hard work being the lucky sperm to get through to the egg.

if you were being serious i agree with you, it is sound advice; earn your fortune.
however getting said advice from a walrus who did not, makes the drinking poor very angry. As someone who does have a predisposed distaste for wealth it's hard to stomach. she doesn't look like she's got a hard time stomaching anything btw.
just love how she's never considered the idea that money shelters you from toil, and toiling in a mine to get it defeats the appeal.

I was under the general impression she turned a few million dollars worth of iron ore leases she inherited into billions of dollars mainly by letting big companies develop them for a cut after iron ore prices went up. If you inherit something, and it goes up hugely in value, that's not the same as making your own money, imo.
That's just what I recall though, so I could be totally off base.

I'm not doubting her work ethic and it still took effort and skill to get where she is, but everyone knows that the more you start off with, the easier it is to rack it up. If you have 10 million in the bank, you can pretty much make 2-300k a year in some low-risk GIC account alone. Wow, who knew it was so easy!
I'd like to see her start of with 100 bucks to her name, no family connections, some school loans, and turn THAT into a Million. Lots of people do it, but it sure is a lot harder.
Unfortunately, I've found come to realize that a vast majority of really successful people and entrepreneurs came from already relatively wealthy families. It's a lot easier to take risks in business when you have something to fall back on. You can try new things and not worry about feeding your kids if you fail. It doesn't mean the rest of us shouldn't try, but the setup is definitely not equal.

If hard work made you rich, the guy who cleans our building would be a billionaire. Luck, intelligence, and connections with other rich people are equally important, but "be lucky enough to be smart and born to rich parents" is the kind of advice it's hard to implement on a general basis.
Oh, and it's amazing how her economic advice to stimulate the economy is to cut her own taxes. Clearly her $30 billion would be $50 billion in no time, with all the concomitant advantages that would accrue for the common citizen thereby!

Hard work is only one factor that causes people to become uber wealthy and successful. Luck has a lot to do with it as well.
I am not a wealthy person (average middle/working class). I also did work reasonably hard to get this way and it is an improvement from my situation at birth, but I don't think that means that I necessarily work harder than someone poorer than me who just didn't have the opportunities or upbringing that I did. I know for a fact that there are thousands of people in this country that work harder than I do and have less to show for it.
It drives me bonkers when extremely wealthy people say that anyone can have what they do if they just worked hard enough. It's complete BS. It takes an uncontollable series of events to create these situations and perhaps a particularly astute or gifted person can recognize these and take advantage of the opportunities when they occur. I say good for them and wish them no ill will for it, but don't make it sound like it's because they work harder.

Ya but in her case it is similar to inheriting a Wayne Gretzky rookie card.
Unless you take it out of the casing and bend it in half it will continue to increase in value.
Edit: After seeing her picture I can now say with confidence she is just another angry fat chick who is jealous of the skinny girls that are socialising and getting all the boys.
Keep being sexy middle wage women, ignore Java over there.

Well spending less time drinking and smoking is sound advice for anyone, but yeah the more time working part probably doesn't really mean much to the guy who works 16 hour days 6 days a week cleaning dishes and delivering food for below minimum wage. I'd say he deserves a drink and a smoke.
