Default London's burning

Didn't see any thread on it and since we're into day 3 of rioting here I thought I might as well start one.

Live updates here:
http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2011/au...am-duggan-blog

Right now the riots are picking up steam again in Hackney.

Rioting started on Saturday night to protest the killing by police of 29-year-old father-of-four Mark Duggan which has sparked running battles between mainly young black men and police in some of London's more underprivileged areas such as Tottenham, Hackey, Brixton and Walthamstow.

For some inexplicable reason a fancy furniture store on King's Road in Fulham near my place was trashed last night.

Interested to hear if Barnet Flame has seen and heard any commotion around his area.

Why do they feel that the shooting was unjustified and why are other policemen in general getting lit gascans thrown at them?

Cops shot and killed some guy in a taxi. Cops claimed they came on under fire. However, preliminary findings are that the bullet lodged in the one police man's radio is actually a police issue round. I smell a conspiracy!

Yeah, I've been watching this over the last two days. Seems like it's becoming more about opportunistic criminals. Organized looting and destruction for the most part now, no?

Usually these riots have more to do with oustanding complaints about social conditions and are set off by a single incident. Obvioulsy some people are being opportunistic, but there's definitely evidence here of some greater problems in European society in general.

Reminds me of the riots involving youth vs. police in the hugely underrated Michael Caine movie Harry Brown. Social pressures have finally boiled over.

I stayed in a nice flat in Brixton for several days four weeks ago, but there were some sketchy areas around there. There was one open market where I saw a couple of guys pushing a pallet of meat through the open streets. One of them fell off the pallet, so the guy just picked it up and threw it back on.

Also, you did not go 1 hour without hearing some sort of emergency vehicle...

Electric Avenue!!! respect

Seriously though Brixton's well slow off the mark, in my day we would have burnt half off the High Street by now.

Yeah, I understand that, I'm just trying to make sense of what I'm seeing as it happens. Does seem to be a lot of opportunism.

But you are right underlying issues and larger problem.

Thought cops didn't carry guns in the UK? What am I missing?
