Default Painting estimate

I thought I would throw this out to the CP world and get a second opinion as I feel that my estimate is way out of whack (I would like to hold back on the amount so as not to taint the numbers from others, I will reveal the price later)

I have an estimate for painting my home interior here are the details

-we will be using a fairly good paint
-the home is one floor, 6 seperate rooms, 1200sq ft, just an average bungalow
-the house will be newly renovated and will be empty at the time of painting
-it is in Calgary

I dont know of any other factors but feel free to ask as I can use the imput

thanks

Rough estimate for that would be $2000. My dad has his own company and I go with him for estimates all the time.

Are you looking for everything (walls, doors, trim, etc.)? I'd figure on $3/square foot.

Oops I thought it was only the walls. That would probably cost anywhere from $3200-4000 depending on what kind of wood and if there are railings...etc.

Get quotes from at least 3 reputable companies; if one is out to lunch it will be apparent. Also serves to act as a bit of an interview so you can get a feel for who seems to know what they're doing.

If you call Home Depots Install service for painting they will put you in touch with 1 of 2 excellent painting companies here in town and both will give you a free estimate quickly. Both great painters and very reasonably priced.

Call About Painting.

~$2K is what it is for walls for a whole house - that's including paint, so make sure you specify that you're getting the paint. Having said that painters can get much better prices for paint than you can.

I'd ballpark around $3500 (for wall and trim), based on recent experience. Also why I'm spending a weekend and painting the place myself.

The thing about that is that if you (the homeowner) supply the paint, the painter will absolve him/herself of all responsibility if "the paint sucks". So the alternative is letting the painter supply the paint. Do that, and you'll save a tiny bit. But at least the painter will have no excuses.
Just don't go buying bargain paint from Liquidation World and expect a painter to make prime rib out of spam.

We painted our house when we moved in and the best paint ended up being CIL/Glidden from WalMart, of all placed. It was very cheap for a tub, and went on the walls excellent, and didn't pull from the wall when taking the tape off.

As we cleared out WalMart, we ended up getting General Paint (twice as expensive) for the rest and have nothing, but bad things to say about General Paint. It took numerous coats compared to the "cheap stuff" at WalMart and sure pulled off the wall badly when taking tape off.

I guess what I'm saying is sometimes the most expensive paint isn't the best.

The painters I talked to recommended certain brands that they were fine with.

It's also going to depend on the quality of the painter. I've paid anywhere from $2000 to $4000 to paint the same house (rental) over the last few years. $2000 was for all the rooms, but no bathrooms or closets. $4000 was the entire place, including all closets and bathrooms, from an excellent painter who was quick and reliable. He re-did all the baseboards, and got my house ready for sale.

It really depends what you're doing on the house. If it's a reno and you're living in it, I can give you his number as I would recommend him to anyone.

The reason for that is because it's junk paint, with little emulsion content.

Do this as a test...Take a "Mr. Clean magic eraser" to the walls painted with the "Walmart wonder paint"...does the sponge cause "flat" spots (remove the sheen)? Does the sponge pull the pigments off the wall? Now do the same to the areas with the GP "overpriced", "inferior" product (it's been +30 days since you painted)? What's the verdict with that?

High emulsion enamels are harder to get coverage with...Any pro knows this. It's all about timing (and technique during) the backroll, and getting tight to your cut lines.

Pulling off the wall with the tape?

You pulled your tape wet...(like any pro knows to do), right?

You cut your tape lines (if you let it dry out), like any pro knows to do, right?

The reason it "pulled" is because of the emulsion in the paint...(and the above mentioned ).

On the subject of taping? "Seven day removal", $5.00 a roll "painters tape" is one of the biggest scams on the market. The junk bleeds like crazy (even well burnished) and stretches crooked when you're pulling it. Buy the "cheap" white high-tack; tape it, burnish it, paint it, pull it, done. No bleed and no tape "tear off"; as long as if you pull it wet, and the surface you taped was prepped properly and dried down for 6-8 hours...

100% BS. The quality of the emulsion is what drives the price point of any latex product on the market today (don't believe me? Do a search on it) . I can likely buy the GP (HP2000?) product, for the same price you paid per gallon @ Walmart for CIL's "chalk and water".

And don't get me wrong here, CIL/Glidden makes some very fine product...but you won't find it at Walmart.

And I've been painting since before there was even such a thing as "100% Acrylic" latex paint on the market. Take it for what it's worth.

But anybody can paint...right? I mean it's just painting...

Ron

PS... I do very little painting any more; I'm a high end shower guy (Tile Setter)...and a custom Carpenter/Woodfinisher(stains and lacquers)...it pays way better money.

Maybe that's because anybody can paint?

Consumers Reports rated Behr paint the best, any thoughts on that?

Also while on the topic, the builder we went with used Glidden paint. Can I match the same colour using a different brand, or no?
