Default Champlain Bridge is falling down

http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/montre...p.html?ref=rss

Those of us from montreal are probably all too familiar with this piece of work. Turns out that after only 50 years the Champlain bridge needs to be replaced to the tune of about $1.5 billion which of course they want the federal government to foot the bill for.

My biggest complaint is that montreal has a track record for construction projects being done poorly and way over budget and 50 years doesn't seem like a long time such that the entire thing will need to be replaced.

I have never been to Montreal, but why would the Feds have to replace the bridge and not the province/city with Fed assistance as most infrastructure projects in Canada are done ?

Also couldnt this just be an over-reaction from the over-pass that collapsed a while ago?

Couldn't agree more with corporatejay, the infrastructure in MTL is horrible, I lived there for half my life. Even 20 years ago you could drive on the Champlain bridge and see the rebar exposed. Here is another bridge in MTL that is in trouble, http://pontmercierbridge.ca/eng/category/closures-and-detours/

mykalberta, one would think that the cost should be primarily covered by the city and the province, but this is Quebec we are talking about, they are "special".

By the way just to add a tid bit of info on the Champlain bridge, it used to have a toll that you had to pay to cross it. I wonder whatever happened to that money? Just sayin'

Is this the same bridge that was brought up during the election?

I was just in Montreal, and noticed a lot of the infrastructure looked pretty beat up. A section of tunnel had collapsed a day or two before we arrived, which made our escape from Montreal even more confusing.

Yet another Montreal piece of infrasturcture crumbling . . . That place is notorious for interchanges/tunnels/bridges coming down due to poor construction and maintainence.

As long as they keep the mob out of this project it might not have to cost so much and be replaced again so soon!

Jamie Nicholls, the MP for Vaudreuil-Soulanges, was asked what more the NDP can do, given that Stephen Harper's Conservatives have a majority in Parliament.
"A majority position means that they are supposed to govern for all of Canada. If they're going to neglect Canada's second major city and its economic well-being, that's problematic. That's against their mandate that they've stated," Nicholls said.

Would you like some cheese with your whine? Honestly, even if he has a point he still sounds like a disgruntled two year old.
