Default WHHL; New rec hockey league in Calgary, looking for info/opinions

Has anyone else heard of this new rec hockey league? They seem to be saying all the right things, but until they actually have a decent number of teams, how do you know if it will be a good league to play in? They start this september, and since there's a lot of posters here that play in various leagues in Calgary, I thought I'd ask here, if anyone else has heard anything about this league, or anyone plans to play in it. Thanks

I can't even find a website for them... just a kijiji ad. Plus, they want $1k non-refundable deposit... seems sketch.

But I'll look into it as a possible alternative for Puckers.

I played rec league once, I hated it. What a joke. Unless you have never skated in your life I would STRONGLY not recommend rec hockey. It's like playing with 6 year olds.

Yeah, if you can skate then don't play rec hockey. It would make it so much easier for me if I didn't have to worry about being the only one who can't skate.

Haha, well in that case yes, rec is the place for you!

I don't know what rec leagues you've played in, but I have played in Rec leagues with former WHL and NHL players.

I have played rec hockey for a bunch of years with both of the guys listed as the league executive but I admit I don't know a whole bunch about the league. I'll see if I can get them to post in this thread.

So the fact that you played in a rec league once means you know about rec hockey in general? The rec league I play in has 12 summer divisions, ranked according to skill level. Now I haven't played in the lowest divisions, but I suspect that if you have never skated in your life, you would do poorly in ANY division. The best divisions are quite high quality hockey.

Much appreciated. There's lots of rec players in Calgary and everyone's always on the lookout for more options. But we definitly need some reassurance, considering it's a brand new league.

As a new league, how good could the ice times be? There's already leagues fighting over times

I would also be curious to see the ice times as well.

I play in the CMHA and we are fortunate enough to have some very good ice times

I don't know many details yet but if I understand correctly, NSD is very involved in this league. I've also heard the league will have good ice times but I'm don't know which rinks or times.

I got the same email from this league. I do like the "Best of 3" playoff series as opposed to the single game elimination type in the league I'm in now. I'd definitely like to hear more from the league executives.

I know both of the guys that are running this league. Worked with Joe for years and he has been talking about doing this for the last few. He left ourcompany to go work for NSD, so it's on the up-and-up as far as I know.

I'll ask him more about it tomorrow.

I got spammed by these guys too. Went to their site to have a look, check things out. As I was reading their rules everything started sounding really familiar. So I went to the rules page for the league I play in... low and behold the Wild Horse guys copied the entire thing word for word. Added a sentence or two here or there, but they didn't even change the heading order of their plagiarism.
NCHL Rules page:

The U of A Dean of Medicine would be proud of this job. Really sketchy in my books. Cool, start your own league but don't just rip off other's work...I'm staying with the original.
