Sandblasting regulations - anybody know?
I live in a new area and believe that whoever did the cement for Jayment completely screwed it up - almost every one of the driveways is a flakey mess. Anyways, a sandblasting company is doing some work in the area and it seems pretty bad.
I have no idea what the regulations are for containment/cleanup in residential areas but I assume that there are some. These guys are pretty much using supplied air (of course) and blasting away with zero regard for the other houses, areas, etc. Is it a free for all or are these guys just slackass morons?

Call 311 and complain? They will send out a by-law guy to investigate it.

Yeah you should call and complain then. There was a guy across the street who was loud and I swear running a body shop. Complained and not long after they sent a person to investigate and they issued him a cease and desist order, haven't had a problem since.
I did go and tell him to stop before I did this though, couldn't hurt to go and complain to the workers first.

What does "using supplied air (of course)" mean?
Anyway, some companies do exposed aggregate this way. Past experience indicates that it's pretty much acceptable for them to fill the entire neighbourhood with dust. Make sure to keep your furnace turned off and replace the filter as soon as they are done.

The actual employee doing the sandblasting would wear a enclosed helmet with a supply of fresh air.

It you use salt on it on the winter it only speeds up the process 20 fold.
My neighbor has a Jayman home and he complained to them to the point that they did come sandblast his driveway to get rid of the flaking. Now the only downside to that is when a company does "exposed aggregate" driveways they use a different rock in the concrete that looks much more appealing, you will not have that obviously because your driveway is a broom finish. Don't get me wrong it won't look bad at all but it won't be as nice as some that you have seen.
I would get on Jayman and see what if anything they can or will do for you, and once you do get it blasted make sure it gets sealed asap it gives is that nice wet look all the time. I actually sealed my driveway even though it's a plain broom finish because it's easier to clean, but I did toss some grip sand into the sealer so it's not a death trap to walk on in the winter.
Good luck and let us know how it pans out for you.

For homes on my street it has been less than 12 months and many are flaking all from different builders. Mine got sandblasted because they poured it on a day that was foretasted to have rain and they didn't cover it up. The house didn't have eaves-trough installed yet and as a result when it did rain there was a 30 foot line about 6 inches wide that became exposed forcing them to sandblast.

Pilsner12,
It is not Evanston but it is pretty much exactly as you described. Most of the bad lots were done by a certain cement company and within one year look terrible.
Gundo,
My driveway is in great shape (I did not buiy Jayman) - I am just suffering due to the very large number of problem driveways on the street and the sandblasting company's zero effort at containment.
Thanks for the replies everybody - if I see that crap sandblasting company on the street again it will be a fast call to by-law.

I will argue semantics in my defense as they certainly do deal with cement and are as such a 'cement company' that also works with concrete.
Other than that point noted

In fact, the flaking on the surface of the driveway is because of too much cement vs too little aggregate near the top of the slab.
