Its too bad really AC is stuck with the burden of being a former crown corp - they could be such a nimble airline if there were less anchors weighing them down.

french judge too
Judge Marie-Josee Bedard

This is stupid, especially because it's the second time around, talk about abusing something.

Edit here is more on this idiot

Quote:
Michel Thibodeau
This federal government employee filed a $500,000 suit against Air Canada because he could not order a 7-Up in French. Despite being fully bilingual, he insisted on speaking in French to the flight attendants, who only spoke English. He repeatedly demanded to speak to the captain, and after he started yelling, the cops were called to meet the Montreal-Ottawa flight. No charges were laid. (Source: Ottawa Citizen)

What does being a former crown corporation have to do with it? Don't all Candian airlines have to follow these rules? I know West-Jet provides service en francais as well.

And on a side note, are West-Jet and AC the only remaining Canadian airlines?

Doesn't Air Canada have to have a french speaking attendant on every flight? Whereas a company like Westjet only needs to have announcements made in each language (recorded if necessary)?

Once again, I must demand that Quebec have a referendum to separate, and this time let's flood Quebec with "Oui" volunteer campaigners...

YAY! A court order asking AC to spend more money internally.

Oh god. Can we please stop funding this abortion of a company?

The official bilingual act is for all Federal Government businesses; Quebec wouldnt sign off on the AC privatization without certain stipulations, this being one of them.

A private business (outside of Quebec) can offer their services in whatever language its customers demand: English, French, Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Arabic and no other languages need to be offered.

Transport Canada only requires that airlines preform the pre-flight safety message in both official languages.

For regularily scheduled air service I believe: AC, WSJ and Porter are the only major ones left in Canada (Porter isnt really a major but...). There are always smaller companies providing specialized or regional services such as Air North etc.

I personally find the inept manner, in which the French try to keep their dying culture relevant, to be a constant source of hilarity.

It's not hilarious when francophones are taking over the federal government. Being bilingual (or speaking perfect french and passable English) ensures that the top ranks are run by francophones who set the direction for languages throughout the country.

The majority of people moving to Ottawa for work are francophone women because they have the easiest time getting hired by the feds.

Canada is some kind of weird country. Elsewhere when you defeat/conquer people, you usually don't ask "would you like more rights and privileges?"

This is slightly off topic, but it does talk to the issue at hand.

I was in Paris last week with my wife, and we passed a KFC. I thought it was mildly interesting to see another American fast food place other than McDonalds or Burger King. My wife was fascinated, however. She turned to me and asked "If they have KFC in France, why did we have to have PFK in Canada?" Good question.

Funny, I had the same thought in Paris. Also, all the Stop signs in France say "Stop" too.

The french are gutless and will back down to anyone. Francophone Canadians, as misguided as their priorities are, have a backbone.

Unfortunately, the majority of bilingual speakers in Ottawa (even those with "passable" second language) are Francophones. I did my graduate work at the University of Ottawa and any Anglophones hired there in administration couldn't speak French. I don't know how they kept their jobs.

The guy in question is from Ottawa. Quebec separating will do nothing to change the Francophone population in eastern Ontario.

On the flip side, across the river in Gatineau, most of the buses don't have this system so English is much more rare. Still... who cares?
