Default Developer preview build of Windows 8 goes live tonight!

I'm sure the Microsoft servers are going to be hit hard tonight, but i need to get in on this and give it a try. Anyone else going to give it a spin? The whole thing looks so good.

I might fire it up on a old machine to check it out for kicks, as soon as I get some spare time ...

I love the smell of fresh software in the evening Even if it is MS.

Actually, I think I might be able to spin this as a work project, and do it on company time!

I'm looking forward to trying out the Metro UI - I think, even as a heavily invested Apple user, that it's an extremely innovative interface.

That's almost the only thing I care about. A major shift for MS, and an essential one for their future I think. If they do it right, which I think they are from what I have seen, it will keep them as a leader in the OS department for quite a few more years.

besides the Metro UI, which i have no interest in, is there any real difference between 7 and 8? as far as i understand the touch interface just sits on top of the regular Windows GUI, so i'm wondering if anything under the hood was changed

I'm sure there is, but it's probably incremental vs. revolutionary just like Vista to Windows 7 was.

They talked about reducing the footprint of the kernel and necessary processes from >400MB to 250MB, which is a pretty good step IMO (smaller usually = more efficient), and I think I read something about how they've changed some things such that drivers will actually be able to reload real-time (yeah yeah, we've heard this in every version since Windows 95, I'll believe it when I see it).

I'm sure there'll be lots of info in the coming year about any significant changes in architecture.

Would love to see something like WinFS return. Having a xml file system or some type of filesystem that's intelligent across applications would be amazing.

In all Mac fanboi truthfulness, after looking over all the available info and screenshots, it is utterly mind boggling why anyone would choose to make that their primary OS. It looks so messy.

Anyone try it under virtualbox yet? My Windows laptop has a broken DC jack that I'm waiting on a replacement part from ShenZhen for, so I'm limited to launching this on a macbook. I'm excited to give it a spin.

Downloading right now. Going to run it on VMware Workstation.

EDIT: x64 version won't run on Workstation 7.x, encounters a panic and shuts the VM down. No idea what the problem is, changing OS versions in Workstation doesn't help. I'm going to try the x86 version and see if that will work.

I have x64 running ok on VirtualBox. Used the win7 template. Guest additions won't install however.

Try installing them manually, in compatibility mode (if there is such a thing)

Weird that VirtualPC would fail, you'd think they'd be using that internally for testing etc. so the dev preview would work well with it.
