Default Climate - World's Oceans At Risk

http://www.stateoftheocean.org/

A high-level international workshop convened by IPSO met at the University of Oxford earlier this year. It was the first inter-disciplinary international meeting of marine scientists of its kind and was designed to consider the cumulative impact of multiple stressors on the ocean, including warming, acidification, and overfishing.

The 27 participants from 18 organisations in 6 countries produced a grave assessment of current threats - and a stark conclusion about future risks to marine and human life if the current trajectory of damage continues:

that the world's ocean is at high risk of entering a phase of extinction of marine species unprecedented in human history.

Delegates called for urgent and unequivocal action to halt further declines in ocean health.

For full details relating to the report summary on major ocean impacts and stressors, released June 20th 2011, please click here

Sounds like the hippies are at it again with their BS.

Science proves nothing and the facts are clearly biased.

The ocean drowns people and it's high time we shut down it's feloneous activities. Down with the ocean!

Not that I'm a doom and gloom tree hugger, but do you actually think that being unable to farm the ocean in any meaningful capacity wont impact you? Or are you just that self centered and deluded?

The less ocean water that we have the smaller the chance that the aliens are going to invade us for it.

Regarding all things regarding climate change ('global warming' to the derp crowd), if there is a middle ground between grass-smoking hippies and burying your head in the sand, I have yet to find it on CP. I can't even tell who's being sarcastic anymore.

I've stated my middle ground a number of times, but this issue has become so misinformed and emotional its hard for a real discussion anymore.

Its very saddening.

I think that, when it comes to the oceans, it's a case of "out of sight, out of mind" for most people.

It would be nice if everyone had the opportunity to go diving or snorkeling in some of the world's best reefs. It would change a lot of perceptions about marine life, in particular it's beauty, value, and fragility.

I have no doubt that, in the few opportunities I've had to travel and dive, I've seen things that (assuming I live to be a reasonably old man) will no longer exist by the time I die.

It's a shame that for most people, their most intimate contact with the oceans and marine life generally comes in the form of a can of tuna.

Just wondering? Have you been using magic mushrooms so much that it has caused the inability to distinguish sarcasm from fact?
