Don't Panic... Stick out your thumb to join the most ordinary man in the world on an extraordinary adventure across the universe in the hilarious comedy, "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy." Earthman Arthur Dent is having a very bad day. His house is about to be bulldozed, he discovers that his best friend is an alien and to top things off, Planet Earth is about to be demolished to make way for a hyperspace bypass. Arthur's only chance for survival: hitch a ride on a passing spacecraft. For the novice space traveler, the greatest adventure in the universe begins when the world ends. Arthur sets out on a journey in which he finds that nothing is as it seems: he learns that a towel is just the most useful thing in the universe, finds the meaning of life, and discovers that everything he needs to know can be found in one book: "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy."
The reviews are very good..

Wow...if I hadn't read the books, that trailer would not have convinced me to go see the movie. Made it look like more of an action movie than a comedy. The jokes they did tell weren't pulled off so great. . That said, they are the GREATEST books ever written, and I am going to see the movie as soon as humanly possible. I assume the movie only covers the first book? Are the others in the works? Are they even planning on doing the others? Or are they waiting to see how this one does?

I have a hard time believing this movie will compare with the book. Half of the humour in the book is found in the narration. How can they deal with that in the movie?
That being said, this was IMO the best book ever written and if the movie is even a shadow of how good the book is, I will go see it.

I haven't read the books [or any books for years] but it looks like an amusing movie.

I don't know if I like some of the design choices, such as how they're doing Zophod's extra head, or Marvin's appearance, or the Heart of Gold, which was supposed to be shaped like a running shoe. Still, the production values look a lot better than the old TV show. It's hard to tell about the delivery of the jokes--could be the way that it's cropped for the trailer.
From what I've heard, this movie is just going to be the first book: The vogons, the heart of gold, the mageratheans, the telephone sanitizer people (I forget their name). It definitely sounds like they're setting it up for a sequel if not a trilogy.
For anyone who's interested, here's a review of an early screening from an obviously biased viewer:

read the books. Even if you don't like reading, read them. They're good for a laugh-out-loud every couple minutes at LEAST. Watching the movie will never compare.

Alan Rickman as Marvin??!!! I can't think of another voice which suits the role so perfectly. Great casting!

Yeah - I hear you.
Although I thought the same thing about "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas", but that ended up being an awesome movie IMO.

I've been rereading the books getting ready for the movie.
Too bad that the salary cap of 42 M didn't come through. Cuz we all know the answer to the ultimate question of life, universe and everything is 42. I guess that would have meant that hockey is the meaning of life!

Anyone else think that the books were overrated?
I read 4 of the 5...wasn't that impressed. I was entertained, for sure...but definitely not up there in the best books I've ever read.
Its got a huge following, but I didn't really see the greatness in it...besides the obvious great parts (the cow in the restaurant at the end of the universe was classic).
Still, I would be interested in seeing the movie.

I very much disagree. If you didn't like the first four, though, I wouldn't recommend the fifth. I still liked it very much, but it wasn't quite on par with the rest.

Well, yes and no about the narration/dialog thing. Listen to the original radio series (predates the books, is predominantly dialog, and funny as hell). The voice of the Guide actually acts as a bit of a narrator in the series, with all the little descriptions of people and planets and devices, and even situations that the heroes get themselves into. With Stephen Fry doing the voice of the Guide here, I hope they use the same approach.

As long as it better than the TV show (now on DVD) I'll be a happy fan.
