Tech Question - USB flash drive
Hey all,
Yesterday a coworker pulled out my usb flash drive without properly ejecting it, and it now has a few folders that are corrupted and won't let me save any new files to the problem folders. Is there any way I can recover the lost files?
Thanks

Nothing you can do about the lost files, but I seriously suggest punching your co-worker in the face.

how old is that drive? i've never had a problem with pulling out USB sticks out without ejecting them first, as long as there were no open files on it

On a windows machine, goto My Computer and go to the drive. Right click properties, goto tools. Run error checking. Check automatically fix file system errors and scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors. Alternatively goto a command prompt and run chkdsk /r on the USB drive.
This will fix all the corruption and attempt to recover what it can. The drive will then work as it did before. No guarantee all yoru files will be fine though.

Just tried to do what you suggested H&L and it says my drive is not formatted anymore, I'm ok with the files, I had a backup of them so it isn't the end of the world, I just need the USB to work again.
The USB is a core micro 16gb and I bought it ~6months ago so it isn't ancient by any stretch.

Hopefully the drive isn't physically damaged or the actual drive firmware hasn't been corrupted.
First thing you can try to do is to format the drive. Right click on the drive and goto format. Then use the default settings. Make sure it is on quick format.
If this doesn't work, download Ameco UDTools from Flashboot.ru
http://www.flashboot.ru/Files-file-304.html
On the 2nd tab (manuf settings), change Scan Level to "Level 1 - Highest Speed". Then go back to the first tab and click on "Start All". This will scan the drive and try to repair the capacity and corrupted firmware.

The Flash drive went boom. So I had the opportunity to speak with customer service at the place I bought it for an hour. I will have to remember to thank my coworker.

How did it go boom? Was it physically damaged?

I would tend to agree. Unless you just saved something to the drive, or have something open there is really no reason to eject it. I doubt the 2 acts are directly related, since I am guessing it is a physical problem with the drive or the usb connector that caused the problem. So it could have happened if anyone pulled the drive out.
If someone has some evidence to the contrary, I would gladly consider it though.

I've pulled out drives in the middle of writing large files and corrupted the drives until I did a chkdsk on them so that can happen.

Yes, while a file is open, which I indicated in my post was a situation that could cause problems. The same can also occur if your disk is not set to allow a quick eject, although I am not sure a removable drive allows that option.
Because this seems like a physical problem with the drive, I can't see any reason it would be related to not properly ejecting.

It just would not be recognized by any computer I plugged it into, wouldn't even let me re-format it. I ended up getting it replaced, but it was a bit of a hassle and a waste of 2 hours today.
Thanks for all the advice though, I tried everything you mentioned but nothing would get the pc to recognize the flash drive.
