Default Buying goods on the interwebs through private sale

Couple of quick questions.

So let's say I'm making a private purchase over the internet and paying through paypal.

What is the standard operating procedure? Pay first, wait for my goods?

What if it doesn't show? Can I file a grievance with paypal? Just cross my fingers?

It appears the guy has sold on that site before with success so I'm not too worried.

It is for $50 total. $40 for the item and $10 through shipping.

The purchase was not done through ebay or kijiji. Bought it off the Buy/Sell on another forum I post on.

I would have thought that you would pay half and then the hooker would deliver the blow and you pay her the balance. Just a hunch though.

Paypal cover your losses only if you are using it for ebay purchase.

If you have your credit card linked to paypal, then you can get your money back from credit card company just incase if you never get item.

And if you do a charge back on your CC that was used for a paypal purchase, I've heard Paypal will then deduct money from your chequing account if it's on there. Be sure to remove it if you have it.

Also, make sure to not pay as Gift. If you do then you can't make any claims at all with paypal.

It was a personal payment but I labelled it as "payment owed" IIRC.

I already paid and the guy says he'll be shipping this morning. Also he had a couple of references of successful sales of similar items so I'm not too worried. And it was only $50. Still not $50 I'd like to lose from getting ripped off but it isn't like I'm buying a car.

For $50 I wouldnt worry about it. If it was anything more you could always COD it.

I have done a few private sales through bgg - never any issues.
