Default The Tennis Thread

With Canada's tennis scene all of a sudden looking interesting (and with a little friendly encouragement) figured my favorite place to talk sports should have a tennis thread.

The South African Tennis Open is ongoing, and the day after Milos Raonic knocked out the #2 seed in the opening round, another Canadian, Frank Dancevic, knocked out the #1 seed leaving two Canucks in the final 16.

Yes that was good timing to start a new thread
Maybe Dancevic can keep rolling anyway. He was looking like a very solid player before all his injuries.

Will be fun to see if Canada can make the world group in Davis Cup this season too.

They could.. they just need one good singles guy. They win the doubles every time, guaranteed.

Is it okay if I throw in some WTA news? The Canadian women are in Serbia to play in the Fed Cup. Both Marino and Wozniak are taking part.

http://www.lovemeansnothing.ca/media...-to-be-webcast

The matches will be available online as well. This is Wozniak's first action since returning from an injury.

Thought about renaming to ATP/WTA/Davis Cup/Fed Cup - now it's the tennis thread

They don't have their A players from the looks of it. Canada is back in a World group after a promotion from the Group 1, Americas.

EDIT: I just found the head-to-head on the Fed Cup website. It gives a solid breakdown, including both rosters:

Looks pretty even except that it's on the road.

Dancevic kept rolling this morning winning again and now heading to the quarters. Setting up nicely for Canada for Davis Cup now with the best form from their two singles players in recent memory.

Does look good, Mexico has nobody, not a player ranked in the top 300!

Only thing is the tie is in Mexico and they will play on the slowest clay court they can find.

They will be streaming the Fed Cup games live on lovemeansnothing.ca at 7 am Saturday and 6 am Saturday. That's mountain time.

There's no runaway winner in the Fed Cup between Canada and Serbia. They are tied 2:2 and they need to play another doubles game to figure out the winner. Marino has looked great. I watched a bit yesterday and it's obvious she'll do well on the tour this year. Wozniak, though, is still rusty and trying to adjust her game after being out with injuries. Hopefully, she can re-gain the form she once had. It would be great to have them both in the WTA Top 100.

And a happy day for Croatian tennis, as Croat Ivan Dodig captured his first ever ATP title today in Zagreb. He's in his late 20s and training with Marin Cilic has completely changed him. To win his first title on home soil is pretty special.

Kind of weird that the women play the doubles last.
Fichman and Pelletier playing doubles for Canada. They are 5-5 in the 1st set. Canada just saved a set point and broke back.

Canada lost 7-6, 6-4

Now they have to wait til the end of the year to see who they play to remain in World Group II.

It'll be one of.. Belarus, Switzerland, Japan or Argentina

I've been a Roddick fan for a long time. It's getting tougher and tougher for me to watch tennis lately...
