Name this Bug
We've first noticed these little guys last summer in / around our house last summer after all that rain, copius amounts of raid and raid-like materials seem to have stemmed them last year and we had hoped our -30 winter would have obliterated the rest, (like my zombie defense plan) but unfortunately they seem to have popped up again.
Anyways, just seeing if anyone recognizes these little "buggers"

tough to see, but my iphone lens doesn't quite focus that close, my digital camera had trouble too, but here's hoping someone is familiar.
anyways, I've eliminated ticks and bed bugs, i thought it might be a type of carpet beetle, since it doesn't fly or jump, but for the most part if you scare it it just plays dead until you squish it. Then playtimes over.

I would say a beetle of some kind. Hard to tell with the fuzzy picture though

I'm going to narrow my guess down to a species of grain beetle. Especially if it's in the home. Some species can fly, but usually don't. The only way to get rid of them is to eliminate the food source. They live in dried foods, usually grains. They love dry dog food or bags/jars of flour/grains.

Not a grain beetle, too round and fat, grain beetles are long and thin with distinctive colouring. I don't really want to speculate past that. Tough to say without a clearer picture. A picture of the 'top' of it, rather than of it on its side would be the most helpful. As someone else said, try the macro setting.

will try that tonight... possibly longer as they are harder to find in the rain.
so far, all the guesses are off after reviewing them on the interwebz, thanks for the suggestions though. I'll bump this when I grab a better photo.
EDIT: hey, i'm a scoring winger! so... 4 years, NMC, 3.5?

Agreed. My wife used to study weevils at the Lethbridge agricultural research station and used to bring them home all the time.
If you can get a magnifying glass and see if it has an "elephant-like" trunk, then it is most likely a weevil.

Only one choice now, burn down your house. Kill it with fire, it's the only way to be sure (unless you have access to a nuclear device).

I think you may be right on the weevil stuff.
I'm changing my guess to grain weevil:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wheat_weevil
It all fits:

"Adult wheat weevils when threatened or disturbed will pull their legs close to the body and feign death."
|
My advice remains the same. The only way to get rid of them is to eliminate the food source. My guess is they are coming from inside the house. Probably the back of a cabinet that has a bag full of wheat products.

Depends on what species of grain beetle you are talking about. The foreign grain beetle, which is very common to households is pretty round.
However, I think the guesses about the weevils were actually correct.

We had a small infestation of red flour beetles. They got into everything. I'd recommend putting rice, flour, any kinds of grains, etc into some plastic bins with lids.

I have been doing insect macro photography for years and that was my best guess, not the easiest pic to figure it out from.

Most Likely a Strawberry Root Weevil. Most definitely a Weevil and nothing to worry about.
