Default Oilers - State of the Team

Well it's been an interesting week learning the in's and out's of the league (still much more to learn), thanks to everyone I've been asking questions to for being so helpful.

On to the team...

Having Joe Thornton (3) and Mike Fisher(7) both in the top 10 in league scoring last year is a bonus. Joe will definitely be the cornerstone of the team going forward. In goal Brodeur had good numbers last year and we will be looking to re-sign him for next season. We will be looking at possibly adding at the goaltender position as we will be a needing a backup.

The state of the farm is a little worrying, though there are a couple good young players that can hopefully make the jump to the big club this year. We are pretty deep at the center position so we will be looking at unloading a center man or 2.
Ready Prospects?
Mathieu Perreault (C) 93 Points
Alexandre R. Picard (D) 48 Points

With only three 4th round picks this year and a 1st and 3rd next year we would like to add some additional picks. However this is lower on the priority list and will only be considered if the right offer comes along.

On the Block

Shawn Horcoff (67) $5M
Samuel Pahlsson (65) $4M
Eric Cole (63) $4M
Tomas Holmstrom (67) $5M

Willing to entertain offers on all but Thornton, Ponikarovsky, Fisher.

It's been another interesting week for me, thanks again to everyone who gave me advice, swayze and simmer being the 2 on msn the most that I went to for help.

After looking over my roster endless times I decided that having 26.5 million tied up at center was too much. The goal became to try and move out at least 1 of my centermen and try and shore up the back end. I was able to do this in moving out Horcoff , having a 3rd line center making 5 million really didn't sit well with me. In this trade I was able to add 2 NHL defencemen in Jurcina and Martinek which were desperately needed. I am without a true #1 dman at this point but having a back end that was at the very least serviceable at the NHL level was more important.

Next was trying to shed some of the grid contracts that I felt were hampering me. The next trade presented itself in an offer for Cole, again I was fairly contract heavy at left wing and Cole was expendable. This trade allowed to me add Jesse Winchester to fill a much needed 4th line center role as well as add some depth at the minor league level. Moving Cole also meant that I could clear some cap space and place a more suitable player in a 4th line role with Tanner Glass most likely filling this spot after spending last season in the AHL.

There will most likely be a couple roster spots available to be filled by younger guys and the hope is they can be solid NHlers. With the cap space that has been cleared I will looking either a) resigning Frolov and/or Antropov on LW and RW respectively or b) filling these spots through free agency

Lastly is the backup goaltender position, Brodeur will be resigned after having a good season last year. At this point the options are a) signing a backup through free agency or b) adding an AHL goalie and giving either Sanford or Endras the opportunity to backup Brodeur this season.
