2011 NFL thread
Since its no longer "off season" I thought we could start this now.
Lots of stuff over the last few days as pre-season games got underway.
Though the Packers were beaten by the Browns last night, i have zero worries when i look at Rodgers numbers against the Brown starting defense.
6/8 74 yds and a TD with a QB rating of 142.7! Only playing two series.
Nice debut for another weapon as well in Randall Cobb who caught 3 passes for 60 yds and returned 2 punts for another 58 yds. 5 touches for 118 all purpose yds...not bad.
EIGHTEEN different guys caught passes for GB last night
Worst story of the last couple days though? Desmond Bishop with a rather large "oops"
The espn write up was misleading, said Rodgers struggled and had a slow start. Then they show the 6/8 for a td confusing.
Looks like the Rams did a number on the colts team minus manning. Samuel was 7/12 45 yards sounds like some Ricky ray numbers there. It's good to hear they are learning mcdaneils offense quick and easy as it should be fun to watch Sam chuck it this year a lot. It won't be the mike martz greatest show on turf and your qb being sacked 97 times type passing but should be fun.
I finally got around to watching the Bucs game from Friday night this morning and was quite pleased with what I saw. Freeman was in fine form, played four possessions and scored on three of them. I was really impressed by Adrian Clayborn, he was explosive off the line and played well. But the most impressive rookie in my opinion was third rounder Mason Foster, management and the coaches seem to be really high on him and I can see why.

rookie Stevan Ridley looked really solid outta the back field and Mallet and Hoyer looked great. I really think that there are teams in the NFL right now that both these guys could be starters for.
Just watched the replay of the Saints game on NFL Network last night, I was very impressed with our defensive pressure, the D looked great (granted it is pre-season, but it was still promising). Man are they looking big up the middle! Jon Casillas was everywhere, I'd love to see him win a starting job at OLB, they need more speed there. Too many successful outside runs the past few years.
Love the CB depth as well, where the hell did Johnny Patrick come from, had no idea he was that good. Scared the crap out of me when he took that knee on knee, good to hear he's only out a week.
My only concern was the OT's still look like a weak spot on that team. I understand why the Saints re-signed Bushrod at LT, but I'm just not a fan. Stinchcomb on the other side isn't any better, as evidenced by the fact that Strief actually has a semi-legit chance at replacing him this year.

Colt McCoy engineered two touchdowns in three possessions and the backups made them hold up in a 27-17 victory over the Green Bay Packers, making a winner of Pat Shurmur in his first exhibition game as an NFL head coach.

NFLN was calling that game the Gregg Williams Blitzapalooza...
McCoy apparently spent a few days this summer learning the West Coast offense from Brett Favre. Honestly, I didn't think McCoy would make it in the pros, but I think he is going to prove me wrong. He has got to be one of the hardest workers in the league. I hope he becomes the answer for the Browns.

He may or may not make it, but yes he works his tail off and has a good head for the game.
I wouldnt read too much into the game againt the Packers though as he was throwing against a team who didnt dress their 2 pro-bowl CB's.

I never quite understood why he was rated and not being able to translate his game to pro coming out of college.
He was a extremely smart QB with decent scrambling ability but everybody wrote him off because of his size, arm strength, and delivery mechanics.
Personally I would much rather have the QB who can read the field and is a good field general, then the QB who is 6'4" with a cannon arm that has no idea how to read the defense.
Of course the true franchise guys are the ones who combine both, but I think the smart QB's can be successful regardless of natural size and ability. (See Drew Brees)
Brady looked almost unstoppable and the revamped D is starting to look very impressive.
Brady said his first outing was "fun."
"After sitting last week, I think a lot of the guys were antsy to be out there," he said. "I'm glad we put some points on the board, but obviously a lot of things we can do better, too."
Mike Vick looked awful last night. 3 INTs and then tackled Polamalu on a return, which was dumb. Not gonna read too much into it because it was preseason and the entire team played like crap, but not a good night.

I think leadership is the most important thing a QB has to have. If the players on the team believe in the guy, and want to play for him. If a QB doesn't have that, you can throw the rest of his skills out the window.
Marty Schottenheimer once commented about how he had Jeff George in Washington who was far more talented, and a much better individual player than Gus Ferotte. He had to play Ferotte though because he couldn't win with Jeff George. The guys in his locker room would bust their balls for Ferotte, for Jeff George they'd mail it in.

Patriots QB Tom Brady
Alright I have to ask and am too lazy to look it up
Who is Terrelle Pryor and whats the deal with him?
He was the Qb at Ohio State University that was part of the tattoo money scandal that received like 8 cars in his 3 years at the school. His coach was fired/quit when he was busted lying about his knowledge of the pryor deals. Pryor promised that he and his 4 coherts would come back to the school if they were allowed to play in the sugar bowl. Since the draft happened he was forced to go into the supplemental draft. He will not be a qb at the NFL level, He will be a very good WR or TE in the NFL but most likely will bust out in a few years only taking a few snaps that matter.

Larry Fitzgerald has re-signed 8 years 120 million in Arizona. Probably the best receiver in the NFL. He catches everything and from all accounts he works his ass off each year, and you don't see the antics from him either. He's a rare breed of receiver who is a superb athlete without the gong show.
