Default Kovalchuk comes to Florida

Here's how the trade breaks down

To Florida

Ilya Kovalchuk
Boatload of cash

To Philadelphia

The 2nd overall pick
Josh Harding
Kevin Connauton
Curtis Hamilton
Brian Day

Normally, I would not have parted with such a high pick, but this year's draft doesn't look to be stellar and the prospects of drafting Adam Larsson didn't really fly to well with me as the last thing I need is another D-man.

I already have plenty of other prospects and players that are higher in the depth charts than all of Harding, Connauton, and Hamilton so it was easier to part with them in order to get a legit superstar winger.

Man that's a heck of a return for Kovalchuk IMO.

Yep, but I have more than enough depth at all those positions to get a longer term piece as Kovy is still a RFA.

Larsson I don't see being anything greater than Roman Hamrlik, which is fine but not something I would exactly covet drafting #2. If there was a Tyler Seguin type at #2, you couldn't pry that pick from me no how.

As for the rest of the players, I have a ton of depth so it's not like I'm suddenly out of forward or defensive prospects of equal or better calibre.

Now my team has a decent 1st line of Kovalchuk-Jokinen-Ryder, with 3 solid defensive lines, a good D-core and a pair of middle of the road goalies. Not great, but it's slowly getting there.

Personally I think that's a pretty even deal. It really is #2 for Kovy and it's tough to get guys of that calibre in the CPHL.

Not too high on Connauton and Day but Harding, pick, Hamilton interest me. Harding imo can bounce back and Hamilton is and under-rated prospect. Dave is not taking RNH 1st so I'll be taking him.

Makes sense for both teams - happy to see Florida making a move to bring in a big time player.

RNH is the best asset coming out of the draft...Dave would be stupid not to take him.
