Default 28 suspects arrested by police in Bridgeland

Anybody live in the area? This article makes it sound rather shady/systemic - is it that bad or not reflective of the overall area as a whole?

http://calgary.ctv.ca/servlet/an/loc...ub=CalgaryHome

Officers also executed 135 warrants for outstanding offences and issued 82 summonses for social disorder crimes, such as drinking in public.

This is the second operation targeting ongoing issues in Bridgeland. The Calgary Police Service will continue to address the identified problems, in partnership with community residents and businesses.

Over the last year, the District 3 Special Duties Team has been addressing the identified problems in Bridgeland.

This is most likely directly related to the Cecil closing, this activity moved north over the river into Bridgeland.

I love the community, my mom moved there with her family when they immigrated from Italy and I lived in one of the new condos in the Bridges for a couple of years. As we search for a house for our family in the inner-city we have actually not paid much attention to Bridgeland due to these reasons. I hope the community can fight back and reclaim the area, major development along the Edmonton trail corridor would probably go a long way to helping in this.

The largest single drug seizure was 897 grams of marijuana, with street value of around $9,000, from one suspect.

$10 a gram? Either the price of pot has gone down since my drug buying days or it's all stems and seeds....

This is good. I owned a condo in Bridgeland and had my parking stall used as a #2 toilet stall more times than I care to remember. Throw in a couple break-ins on my truck as well.

I loved the neighbourhood for it's closeness to everything but it was just a little too close to the Drop-In Centre. If their "residents" didn't make it back in time or were turned away, they often came back over the bridge. But that's part of inner city living. If this "crackdown" works, it will just shift the population to another area of the city and back to Bridgeland eventually.

Sounds like you were getting ripped off, pretty sure if you buy bulk its quite a bit less than $10/g.

Its no surprise really that Bridgeland saw a rise in such behavior. With such a large police presence downtown, it pretty much just pushed these types of people out of the core to surrounding areas.

You paid over $4500.00 for a pound of pot?

Well this is a price for Calgary and it's valued higher in the States so a gram there costs about $20, but if you are in Canada and paid those prices you were being ripped off. An eighth sells for $25.

An eighth was 40 bucks when I was a punk youngster, and 15 bucks a gram. The BC pot fad has created some more competitive prices I see.

I live in the neighbourhood, and it seems to be a daytime problem. In the evenings and weekends I never really see much going on. All the break-ins are during the day, and some of you will remember my problems with that last year. So far in 2011 there has only been one residential break in: http://crimemap.calgarypolice.ca/con...aimerPage.aspx

I think the big problem is the Edmonton Trail corridor, where there is some low income housing and some definite transient activity. The corner of 1st Ave and Edmonton Trail is constantly having cops come in and crack down on the sketchos. Oddly enough, the further East you go in the neighbourhood, the better it gets. I have noticed a TON of cops lately, and now I know why.

I just ran the crime stats for the last 6 months and Hillhurst had more offenses. So it seems to be in line with other areas close to downtown. I'm glad they are working to get rid of the people that no one wants around though. In Hillhurst you have a lot more "normal" people walking around to make you feel comfortable if you encounter one of the criminals.

Isn't it usually the case where most of these people are habitual criminals and will be out on the street in no time anyway?

Yup. Apparently it's super frustrating for the police as they're grabbing the same guys all the time. As others have said, they kept picking them up by the Cecil, so they moved to Bridgeland. Then they kept picking them up in Bridgeland, so they moved back downtown. Then they started picking them up downtown again....

Rinse/repeat.

I know someone doing some consulting work with Alberta Justice right now to develop a long term strategy to do something other than the status quo.

Interestingly enough, a shelter or two just closed down in the East Villiage. The reason? They were getting too empty. So at least some progress is being made in the homeless department.

I wonder if they'll recommend the Brazilian (old school) approach...

I'd say that the situation in Bridgeland (and even our East Village) is not even close to that.
