Whether I get one or not when it's released depends on it's launch titles and whether or not the ones I'm interested in are console only games.

It will be interesting to see how quick the h4x0rs take to pwned this new console. With the proprietary parts and connectors, their task will be much harder.

Not sure if I like the new controller, they seem to have jettisoned some of the existing buttons. Those were always great for rapid access to maps/items etc during gameplay.

By waiting another year, PS3 is rumored to be even better than XBOX 360. Interestingly enough, ATI shares jumped 7% today on the X360's release. Don't these guys read the internet?

It's got some cool features that I like. I'd really like it though if it was backwards compatible... something they're supposedly working on (though they wouldn't say even if they had it working, undercut their current sales).

Yeah, this pic sure makes it look that way:

http://www.turd_ferguson.shackspace.com/XBOX360BC.jpg

They haven't said any thing official about it (nothing in any of the specs released or articles or interviews one way or the other). But I'm sure they're trying. It'd be quite difficult to do however considering the totally different platform (different processor, video chipset, etc).

When is later this year, before Christmas for sure.

I think the $ amounts running around have been $299 for the base console, and $360 for the version with the hard drive (both US dollars).

It means that you will be able to play Xbox games on the Xbox 360.

Looks cool, but I think I'll be waiting for the PS3. Plus it looks like you're going to need an HDTV to really appreciate these new consoles.

Hey X-Box nerds (jk).

I haven't owned a console since the Sega Genesis, but I found this article from Wired really interesting, looking at the development of the Microsoft's gaming strategy and a look to the future.

From what I understand is if you just buy the 360, it's not backwards compatible... you need to purchase the HDD for it, and that will include instructions in it to make the 360 backwards compatible.
Makes sense... MS knows that owners of the orignal Xbox will most likely get the 360 with the HDD - just so much nicer than having to purchase 6 memory cards, and so no reason not to get it.

Yeah that's the rumour and has been. It should be more powerful if given an extra year to tweak (like the X-box vs PS2...which when it comes to gaming power is an absolute slaughter).

That said there seems to be a few "experts" who are getting sneak peeks at these consoles that the PS3 has a lot of power but that power isn't being harnessed for gameplay properly or efficiently. They think the power thing is in the end going to be quite close. In the end it is the games that matter and with the headstart, if Microsoft puts together an impressive array of launch software it may determine who comes out ahead.

It really isn't dependent on the machine performance when they are both going to perform very well it is going to come from software and on-line play. I'd imagine that X-box keeps the advantage in online play for a good while. Can they get an advantage with games?

What I like is that X-Box 360 is going to allow atleast some portion of online gameplay for free. You won't get all the bells and whistles but you shouldn't have to pay unless you want to be a hardcore online gamer.

Man, I am finally in the market for something like this and now I don't know if I should just wait.

I put off buying an Xbox or PS2 until I was done university, and now I find out there is something better coming out.

What the.....? Where did you get that idea from.

They haven't specified any plans for backward compatibility yet because they simply don't know if they can emulate the Xbox on it or not. The Xbox 360 comes a hard drive (20gb) that can be upgraded.

Yeah, I was in the same situation as you at the beginning of the year and if it wasnt for my friend telling me about the Xbox 360 coming out this year I would have bought an Xbox or PS2.
