Agh, weeds! Any way to control them?
So of course the dirt they used to grade my lot is filled with all kinds of plant matter, and of course now my dirt farm yard is filled with plants of all kinds. The neighbour said he tried Round-Up to no avail and is simply using a trimmer to knock them all down every so often.
Any advice on something I could do that's more permanent than a weed whacker? Something to kill them all until I decide to put in grass (likely next summer)?

yep as jpold says....I was going to suggest round up, and I still think it would get rid of the bigger problems....but you should still get down and dig em out by the roots.

A few industrial sized bags of salt should do it...
Your yard is just dirt right now? Try Total Wipe Out Concentrate. It's perferct for newly built homes with dirt yards cuz it kills everything, weeds, grass, flowers... And since you only have weeds, yer good to go.
Just checked online, you can get it at Canadian Tire and they're giving 5x BONUS CANADIAN TIRE MONEY for buying it. OMG!!

Just be careful what you apply to the soil; anything that does a good job of poisoning the soil will also make it tough for when you want to start a lawn later on.
Myself, I slowly went around my yard with a Weed Annihilator. It took a while, but I got all the weeds killed before putting my lawn down.

Yeah my only concern with a really strong chemical is that it would inhibit anything else.
That Weed Annihilator looks interesting actually!
Ugh, digging them all out by hand is the last option
EDIT: Hm, that Total Wipe Out says that the products gets broken down over time. Maybe I'll give that a shot.

Yeah; essentially it's just a blow torch with a long enough pole to kill weeds. The other thing they put on the package for a use is for starting campfires. At first my friends accused me of cheating when using it for camping. Then when they realized how easy it was to start the fire............

True I'm not in a rush.. but I do like the idea of enforcing my complete domination over weeds in one fell swoop.

Killex works great. Not the one in the spray bottle but the one that attaches to the end of your hose. Doesn't kill quack grass though.

Dont use diesel, that WILL stay in your soil for decades. Round up was designed to become inert as soon as it hits the dirt. So, it only works on plants that are grown. Usually you will need to make several applications because you will need to kill all the seeds in the soil and you will have to wait until they germinate.

Wha-? I just checked kens link, that thing is crazy. I used to use a spray called Weed Annihilator and assumed that's what he meant. That's unreal. Man, the nutty garden gadgets they're coming out with...

Get that plasticy canvass stuff that goes under playgrounds and cover your entire lawn with it. No sunlight = no weeds!

Another thought is to get some big pots, boil water and pour it over the weeds. Of course this will take a while for you to reload and re-heat the pot.
Or maybe run a high quality hose through your basement window to the hot water tap for the washing machine, and turn up your hot water tank and spray the heck out of them with hot water.

I've got that, and shale rocks on top of the canvass (the name now eludes me but I knew it before I read your description of it lol ) and the weeds still grow through it. I guess there is a hole in it from an old shrub that the previous owner had planted and that I neglected and killed, but it is covered up with the shale rocks.
