Default Hwy 1 closure east of Calgary

anyone know what happened right before Chestermere? from what i could tell it appears all traffic east and west on highway 1 is closed and being diverted through Chestermere to 17th ave (i'm not positive on westbound, but there's bumper to bumper cars on Paradise Road in town which i've never seen before)

and a warning to anyone traveling that direction from the city this evening, make a right at the last set of lights on Garden Rd. the police have the highway closed further up at Range Road 284, but that connects to 17th at an uncontrolled intersection and the traffic lineup was at least a mile long from what i saw

i suspected as much, and i bet it's right at the intersection of Hwy 1 and Paradise Rd. they really need to do something about that intersection, there's far too much traffic turning in and out of there for it to be completely uncontrolled. i used to take that as a back route into Calgary for work every morning since it was a little faster than going over the bridge to the main interchange, but that left turn is a pain in the ass (and dangerous) to make in the mornings so i gave up doing it. i see an accident at that same spot every few months now

That's exactly where it was. I drove by and there was a child's car seat sitting on the ground next to one of the vehicles involved. This made me cringe, thinking the worst, and unfortunately it looks like I was right.

CALGARY - A young boy was killed in a two-vehicle crash and a man from Calgary is dead following a fiery wreck after two separate collisions outside city limits Tuesday afternoon.
The collision east of Calgary that killed the boy and sent two young children to hospital with critical injuries was a “tough scene” to witness, emergency responders said

with that big new development right beside the highway, that intersection is only going to get busier. something needs to be done there
