Default Apple TV Sync

I have the first edition of Apple TV and have loaded a ton of downloaded videos onto it. Once loaded, I usually delete them off my computer. This is great and all, but I got to thinking the other day, what if I have an issue with the HD on my Apple TV? I would lose all of the downloaded and converted videos.

So what I would like to do is sync them all back to my computer and put them on an external HD for safe-keeping.

Now, maybe it's just me, but I can't seem to figure out how to do this? How do I get the content to sync back with my computer? This should be easy, but I can't figure out how to do it. Any Apple TV folks out there know how I can get this done? Thanks.

I'll start off with... I don't know how.

I would imagine it's the same as an iPod, in that it should be possible, but with 3rd party software.

Found this: http://macosx.com/forums/appletv/300...f-appletv.html

I'm not savvy enough to know if that's a solution tho. (I mean the link provided in the 2nd post.)

I use a program called filezilla to bring programs from my PC to first gen Apple TV. I can see the files on the ATV so I would presume that you can bring the files back. Have not tried this so if it works let us know.

My ATV is modded with the ATV flash program so I can transfer all the files without converting to the Apple format. Really pleased with my ATV.

No luck...cannot connect. I've disabled all firewalls locally. Would try the Apple TV IP Address as it notes, but I would have no idea where to find that.

Crazy that you can't just sync back to your computer...especially files you have copied to the AppleTV yourself.

Unless the videos you're referring to were purchased from the iTunes store, you're screwed without 3rd party software.

You wouldn't be the first person to make this mistake, treating their Apple device (AppleTV, iPod, iPad) like an external hard drive. I mean, technically it is... but it isn't...

As a rule of thumb, you should NEVER delete any media from your iTunes library.

If you pulled the hard drive out of the AppleTV and used a SATA (or IDE, I dunno which it is) to USB adapter, it should mount on any Mac - it's just a customized version of OS X 10.4 on a standard HFS+ partition, as far as I know.

You can even get HFS+ software for PC's that should allow you to copy data off the drive.
