Anyone here worked at Future Shop?
So my brother started working there recently, and is about to quit because the managers are straight up telling him to lie to customers about their products and warranties they offer.
They are training him to lie about warranties and what they cover just to get people to buy the warranty. (in a hush hush kind of way) When the customer comes back they all play stupid and deny the sales person said that was covered.
Isn't that illegal? Who could he complain to? He's not comfortable with ripping people off so he is going to quit.

Laptop Depot does the exact same thing. Amazing what happens when the 'warranty' isn't even in writing anywhere!
Which Futureshop, btw?

I used to work there, I never lied about what the Warranty was or was told to lie, and this was before Best Buy bought them. Maybe your brother's boss is just a crappy sales person.

Had a few friends work there 2-3 years ago at Northland.
I wouldn't saying lying is outright encouraged but there's definitely a Lionel Hutz "the truth" (smiles and nods head) and "the truth" (frowns and shakes head).
At the end of the day employees are encouraged to lie because their sales are based on commission and a huge portion of that comes from warranty. The PSP (product service plan) is frequently lied about.

I worked at FutureShop years ago, I was never asked to be dishonest. I had warranty guides in my pocket at all times.
Best advice is clarify exactly what is being asked of your brother, it could be a misunderstanding.

I worked at the Northland Future Shop about 4.5 years ago and they never pushed us to be dishonest. Working on straight commission you were expected to sell and get good numbers but I was never told to lie.

Well the service plans are the biggest money maker for the company, and for the salespeople. If you can't sell the service plan, you're basically out of the job.
If your bro wants to make money and stay with them for a bit, short of outright lying you may as well do whatever it takes! (planting seeds of doubt, forcing out a yes). I was really bad at it - not for everyone.

Some girl at the old FutureShop Chinook once tried to tell me that a sensor defect on a camera I had used for about a week was "normal wear and tear".

all of these places combined are still not worse than Soundsaround NE!
(At least back in the 90's when I went there, never again though)

I worked at FS about 20 years ago, and spent time in Lethbridge, Med Hat, Edmonton, Calgary Winnipeg and Regina.
I was never trained to lie about the CSP, or the product, in fact back then, I would have said that there was a pretty high level of integrity in the company.
Its true that you can make really good money by selling the warranty, and they could be a little pushy on it, even through when I hit the manager program I strongly discouraged that.
But back then, especially on Computers when the average parts and services work was hideously expensive there was some good value in the package, same with big screen T.V.'s with the onsite portion of the warranty.

If you buy the product with warranty but return it like 5 days later, does the employee still get the commission?

Lol true, and I can admit Lebanese guys are usually the slimiest salesmen, but they usually like to stick to the car business.

A little off topic, but, no service plan for me, ever again. Bought a 52" plasma about 6 years ago when they still sold for in excess of $5,000. Bought the 3 year plan, fair sized investment to protect and was encouraged with the relatively new technology etc. to do so. Nearly 3 years in the remote quit working and they sent some guy from local repair place out. Problem was in the unit and he had to take it to his shop to diagnose and repair. A few weeks with no tv and crappy service from that company with the return, didn't put back on pedestal or re-connect etc. and believe it or not the repair was almost as much as a new similar unit. Well about 5 days past the three year mark same problem. Future Shop "Sorry you're SOL." Nice guarantee of workmanship.

Pretty sure they do. About 5 years ago when I bought my T.V from there and after declining the warranty they were offering the guy said if I bought the warranty he'd throw in the stand for free and said I have 30 days if you change your mind about the warranty. I returned the Warranty plan the next day and kept the $200 stand.

No Puckluck, I think what happened was the guy lost all of his commission at that point.
He was playing the odds that you would forget or put it off, and lost.

Yeah, could be. Honestly I have no clue, but the way he was pushing me to buy it and having 30 days to return it made me feel like he didn't care if I returned it, and just wanted me to buy it that day.
