Default Lakeview Storm System Improvement Project

I drove past this project in North Glenmore Park yesterday and decided to learn more about it. It is pretty interesting.

Essentially the Lakeview community has had problems with flooding for the last 7 years or so. A investigation into this found that the culprit was that the storm water drainage was inadequate, owing to storm water drainage pipes that were too small.

Also, previous to this project, storm water drained directly into Glenmore Reservoir.

A project was undertaken to correct this. The project consists of increasing the size of the underground pipes carrying storm water and the addition of a "wet" pond to North Glenmore Park that the storm water will flow into, removing sediments and pollutants, before it flows into Glenmore Reservoir. This will obviously improve the quality of the water that flows into Glenmore, which is where we get a lot of our drinking water.

I thought the whole thing was interesting and had not heard about it before now so I thought I would pass along the information!

Basics of the project

FAQ on the project

Rendering of the "wet" pond and surroundings: (Behind spoiler tag due to size)

Spoiler!

In the image, PWL(dark blue) is the permanent water level. The pond is designed to be kept at a depth of at least 7-9 ft on a permanent basis. HWL(light blue) is the high water level.

Living in the area, there is also (now completed) upgrade of the sewer system a few blocks north.
In the big storm in mid June 2005, there were a lot of drainage issues. The city wanted to do a pilot project a street over where they took out sidewalks and made bigger storm sewers as part of this overall plan, but pulled the plug last year.

Always wondered what that big space in NGP was originally planned for. The rest of the park has Pinic areas and playgrounds along with road or path access, but that massive space south of the homes and west of the road, where the ponds are going never has had anything, not even trees.
Maybe was proposed to be a rec centre? There are five schools in the area, and a shopping plaza as well already.

The city has been doing this kind of project all over the city the last while. It's really valuable to take care of our water.

Calgary puts water back into the river cleaner than it takes it out of the river. It's something we should all be proud of.

Hey guys, sorry for the poor image quality on my original post. It is better now, and I put the image behind a tag since it is so big.

That image is quite cool - now I know why they have that berm inside these ponds, which are being built all over the place - it's for catching and settling sediment in one spot, and the rest of the system handles outflow. I'd always assumed it was a wave/erosion thing,
