I've stayed in Canmore, but not Banff. Can't remember the name of the place, it was 10 years ago.
I could recommend a place in Jasper if you want. The Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge. I go there once a year. Oh look, I recommended it whether you wanted or not.

What are you looking for in hotel.
Hard to beat banff center for value.
For me a hotel is a hotel so unless you are going somewhere like the banff springs it doesnt really matter but then I perfer a tent and a campfire

Rimrock is really nice, Banff Springs is nice but old, it's like a castle though which is awesome.

If you have kids or going with family you can't beat the Douglas Fir Resort...we love it their. Condos with own kitchens, waterslides, 2 pools, and nice trails nearby. You're a little removed from the "action" from the town area so that may or may not work for you.

I'm a big fan of The Fox. The hot tub is in my opinion of the coolest features I've ever seen in any hotel.

I've always been partial to the Delta Royal Canadian Lodge, assuming the budget doesn't stretch to the Springs.

We are campers but for winter getaways we like the Rimrock. Beautiful rooms and facilities, great lounge and restaurant. The free shuttle bus to town is a nice bonus. Great for a romantic weekend or a family getaway. And if you pay attention you can get good deals too.
