Never been to Juans, but always enjoy El Sombrero on 17th Ave for some quality Mexican.

Yes, haven't been there in years, but I remember it was good back in the day... shocked it's still around, given how long restaurants normally last... must be good to make it 20 (?) years.

I've been to Juan's several times, and I really like it.
I would definitely recomend it, especially the Encheladas Rojas (sp???)

There is the one further west on 17th opposite the mcdonalds I think, in a gold/yellow building very authentic mexican tacos like they are right off the cart except the price of course.

Very true. Julio's is great for drinks, but the food is sub-par and the prices are well above par...

As a person who goes to Mexico and eats were the locals do only. I dont do resorts, I still say that the one I mentioned earlier on far west 17th is a close to authentic tacos in downtown.
There is another off memorial in the NE has only one big round table and mom makes the tortillas to order.

The taco are the authentic type and very tasty.
El Sombrero is great for cheese and more cheese. Tasty though.
If you like more American Mexican Avacado on 17th ave and 3rdish street SW is decent.
|
thank you Los Chilitos is the one I was talking about

+1 - food is crap at Julio's. Ok for drinks.
We have nothing that compares to mex restaurants in California and Arizona.
Salsita (Northmount and 14th st) is good, but more of a deli. Salt & Pepper is decent.
There is a place in Oakridge that is recommeded (at the end of Southland Drive IIRC).

SE Mexican
Not downtown but the best Mexican I have had in Calgary is Tu Tierra, which is in the SE on Fairmount Drive, they also have a location in the SW Mi Tierra but I have never been there.
http://www.urbanspoon.com/r/15/15050...Tierra-Calgary
Recommend the Cochinita Pibil, that is some tasty taco.
Mi Tierra is in Oakridge and the place that troutman is elluding to above and below apparently.
