Is it really emo? You would be the first person I know to decribe it as emo.

I never heard spoon before so maybe emo was directed at them but, The Decemberists are definetely not emo and it takes listening to them for 30 seconds to figure that out.
Music recommendation:
Death From Above 1979 - You're a Woman, I'm a machine

I downloaded 3 of The Decembrists songs off of the KRS site, and at least 2 could easily be described as emo, and the other one is arguable:
http://www.buyolympia.com/killrockstars/si...7510/ListenFree
The Architect, and The Engine Driver are about as emo as it gets.
Of course, that is all I have to go on. I've never listed to any of their other stuff. Not that care if they're emo. I listen to some bands that might be considered emo. I just know that there are some people who really hate it around here.
Anyway, I would recommend almost anything from KRS or KRecs. I find I can trust almost anything on their labels.
I also would recommend:
Blonde Redhead
Deerhoof
Aqueduct
John Frusciante
Porcupine Tree
Katatonia
Hot Hot Heat

You can hear a few songs of theirs on the website. "Why I Bother" is getting decent radio play here right now.

why do all these new bands look the same? its funny, i take a chance on all these newer bands who get all the critical praise (eg. arcade fire), and not one of them seems to be what they're hyped up to be.

Do a google search.
I did, and there are a lot of sites that call The Decemberists "emo" or compare the to other "emo" bands.

Maybe, but like I said - look around the net. They are quite commonly referred to as "emo", so there are a lot of people with no clue I guess.
Honestly though, if you listen to the Decemberists songs that I posted, what is the big difference between them and other supposed "emo" bands like The Postal Service or Dashboard Confessionals? I really can't tell a big difference. Sure they have their own style, but they they don't sound like a totally different genre. Similar lyrics too.

Did someone say emo?!?!
My advice..
Stars.. Set Yourself On Fire is amazing.. I would totally classify the album as emo, it's entirely dedicated to bad break-ups, ex-sex, meeting your ex again, finding out about the ex's new fling.. If you listen to He Lied About Death you'll be hooked.. These Montrealers kick the living crap out of The Arcade Fire.. SOOOO MUCH BETTER!!
Damien Rice - Look for the song Woman Like A Man in particular
Jack Johnson
Rise Against
Paul Simon - Graceland is rocking my world
Ben Folds - try to find "Bitches Ain't shinguard" it's a freakin' hilarious single
Stereo MCs
Some of the new Prodigy is pretty wicked
Deftones
Elliot Smiths last CD (he stabbed himself in the heart) From A Basement On The Hill is spectacular
Zero 7
Pearl Jam
The Mutha fatain' Browns
PJ Harvey
Sparta
Ben Harper
Nightwish
Reggie And The Full Effect
The Postal Service
K-Os
Jurassic 5
Find the song Miami by Counting Crows
Pocket Dwellers
Lagwagon
Bad Astronaut
Scott Garth
Mad Caddies
Alexisonfire
That's all for now.. I'm just going through my shuffle at the moment

I saw them live the other night. They were tight. They will be signed to a major label soon.
As for me...I've been listening to the new stuff from the Mars Volta, Trail of Dead, Kings Of Leon.

The Killers
Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros
The Dudes
The Epoxies
Those are the five in my cd player as of now.

Hey Kermit.
It's pretty much confirmed that Pearl Jam will be touring Canada for the first time since 1992 this summer. They are a great live band. I hope to catch a couple shows on the tour.
