Default Somali Pirates

How far does this have to go before we get serious ?

Quote:
Four Americans aboard a yacht hijacked by Somali pirates were gunned down by their captors Tuesday.

Pirates have increased attacks off the coast of East Africa in recent years despite an international flotilla of warships dedicated to protecting vessels and stopping the pirate assaults. Multimillion-dollar ransoms are fueling the trade, and the prices for releasing a ship and hostages have risen sharply.
Pirates currently hold 30 ships and more than 660 hostages, not counting the attack against the Quest. Before this incident there were less than 10 pirate related deaths this year.

I think the response is already pretty strong. There is a huge number of warships in the area. The problem is these guys are coming to sea on little boats that are hard to detect and intercept before they get to their targets.

The real solution is to target economic and instability issues in Somalia itself

I would take the Russian approach to these things. Find out who these guys are and kidnap their families... or worse if necessary. They'd understand real quick...

Didn't Obama already blow some of their heads off? I'd like to see that happen again.

Its one of the largest shipping lanes in the world, there is a strong presence of military in the area both on sea, and in the air. This is a vast area of water, and these pirates are sophisticated even though they lack technology, they have powerful weapons such as grenade launchers.

Sad to hear about people being killed, but stay out of the area if you dont want to risk it. Large cargo ships are better equipping them selves to fight off pirates, yet they still manage to overtake these massive ships.

I'll just go ahead and assume those guys were on that boat in the first vid when it exploded.

I'm no expert, but I'm fairly certain that it's common practice to sink pirate boats after taking everyone prisoner.

But, then again, I think the russians have been accused in the past of shooting pirates.

The problem is that most of the captured pirates are simply released to go back to work, due to jurisdiction issues in international waters. You have to deal with them just like in the 18th century - summary execution on the spot. Seriously.

But the BBC's Will Ross in Nairobi says the pirates' telling of the encounter differs from the US Navy's. The pirates report the US warship attacked first, killing two pirates, and the hostages were killed in retaliation.

I find it hard to believe this situation isn't getting more press with 660 current hostages.

You can bet this will be investigated to death (oops, sorry) in the US, so we will know exactly what happened eventually...

The seals killed one pirate with a knife?

That's nuts.

Irregardless , I think the best course is to just sink every pirate or suspected pirate ship on sight. It would certainly make them second guess their decision to attack merchant/civilian vessels.

They should start setting up bait boats - ones just like this elderly couple were on but with a hold full of seals or spetsnaz. That would make for good youtube.

From the BBC article:

"The US has gained recent experience prosecuting pirates in civilian courts.

Last week, a Somali man who pleaded guilty to a pirate attack on a US-flagged merchant ship was sentenced to more than 33 years in prison.

Abdiwali Abdiqadir Muse is the only survivor of the crew of pirates who attacked the Maersk Alabama merchant ship off Somalia's coast in April 2009.

He was captured by the US Navy, whose sharpshooters killed three other pirates trying to escape on a lifeboat with the Alabama's American captain."

The same article says more than 600 hostages are being kept on 30 captured boats right now. Regardless of the amount of effort going into the pirate situation, based on those numbers it's clear that it's not enough.
