I'm sorry but after seeing that goddamn joke of a fight just now between Benoit Gaudet and some random Korean there is no way Boxing can seriously be considered a fair olympic sport. Now I know Boxing has always been corrupt but I can not beleive what I just saw. Gaudet just lost his match 28-16 despite carrying the fight, the Korean would hug Gaudet and then on the break he would give weak jabs to the body that were called points but the Canadians direct blows to the face were ignored!!!
I hate boxing.

I thought Gaudet lost the fight, but it was not as one-sided as the scorecard had it. Maybe they should just fight until someone is knocked-out. No judges necessary.

Why, I once watched Gentleman Jim Corbett fight an Eskimo fellow
bare-knuckled for 113 rounds! Back then, of course, if the fight lasted less than 50 rounds, we demanded our nickel back!

The olympics has had its fair share of bad decisions..the best that comes to mind is Roy Jones Jr's dismantling of some Korean guy in the gold medal fight..the Korean was beaten and bloody..and than given the decision. Fights like that one helped change it to the point system, but there will always be flaws when you allow someone to use thier opinion to pick a winner.
What about the other sports though? Badmitten? Ping Pong? Dancing? I mean..im all for a good dance or ping pong game but an olympic sport? I dunno.
If you consider some of the events they hold there as sports.. than why not include Chess, Checkers, Texas Hold'em, and Cheerleading as events too?

At least sports like ping pong are won on the skill of the players, not based on a 3rd parties' perception. Today's match was a travesty. Would he have won? I don't know, but no way was the fight as one-sided as it was scored. What a joke of a fight.

Judging sports are often b/s (figure skating, gymnastics) but come on, this is boxing.
How could you say boxing shouldnt be an olympic sport, it was one of the original events from the ancient greek olympics, and definatley one of the true tests of physical and mental ability. I like the international format in that, you cant just be a big meathead, take shots all match to the head and body, and then blow the guy away, there is srategy involved, its just to bad they couldnt have computer scoring somehow, like they do in Olympic fencing, probably not possible, but would be the perfect system, and would take out human error.

Kipper I do think Boxing should be an Olympic sport but when matches are so blatantly corrupt like the ones today I just don't see the point of running something based on politics and not physicality.

I would be fine if the Olympics got rid of all the judged sports period, its too easy to corrupt them.
Maybe the Olympics should go back to its original sports
Marathon, wrestling, and beer drinking
It could last three days and only cost the host country $150,000,000

I understand where your coming from, believe me I get pretty p*ssed off watching those matches sometimes too, but I still think boxing with judging the way it is, is better than no olympic boxing at all. Its still my favorite event, and I am a huge fan of many events. I find that 9 times out of ten the right man wins, it is a real bit** that 1/10 the decsion might go the other way, but that is very simliar to pro boxing, once it goes to the cards(Tyson/Hollyfield? just one example)

Gaudet won that fight clearly, but the Korean was given alot of phantom points, and instead of a 5+ point win for Gaudet, he lost by a landslide. Much like the Egytptian fighter 'out-pointing the Romanian defending silver medalist
http://www.tsn.ca/olympics/news_story.asp?id=95871
The crowd hissed and booed at the decision, feeling the Romanian was ahead on points, but he somehow lost by 12.
The ugliest non-call, was Egyptian Ahmed Ismail's forearm to Canadian Tyler Steward's throat, actually bending him over the ropes backwards. Ismail never lost a point, and wasn't even given a warning.
The director of officiating at the Olympic boxing venue is from............ Egypt

The Marathon wasn't in the original olympics.

Why boxing? How about synchronized swimming and synchronized diving? Has anyone here EVER 'played' either of those two 'sports'? What about that girly gymnast thing where they throw the balls up in the air, cartwheel, and then catch the ball? Or the gymnasts with the streamers? WTF?
And while we're on the subject.. What about racquetball??? Why isn't that an Olympic sport? And Ultimate Frisbee? Ultimate is a beautiful, athletic, and competitive sport (do a Search, the World Ultimate Championships just finished in Finland), and no one playing it ever received a point for Artistic.
Sports that recieve half their scores from Artisticness in the Olympics should all be banned. At this rate, next thing you know, we'll have Ballet as an Olympic sport.

I also think Ultimate Frisbee should be an Olympic sport. And on the topic of boxing, who watches Olympic boxing? Nobody cares.

Chess was a Demonstration sport at the last Olympics.
Bridge was also a Demonstration sport in the winter olympics and Canada took the gold

ironically its the backalash against corrput judging you're angry at - or at least thats my take on it.
To remove as much subjectivity as possible the judges do not grade blows based on impact or anything. 2 out of 3 judges see a fly swat connect, thats a point. 2 of 3 see a huge left hook connect, still 1 point.
I think thats the way it goes anyway.
