Default Keeping lumber in the house

There's apparently a 20% off everything friends and family sale on at Totem tomorrow.

I need put up about 25-30' of fencing on either side of the house. Would it be bad to buy the lumber and store it in the basement until May? I have heard this will warp the lumber, is it something I should be worried about if I stack it properly?

Good luck with that. you will have warping issues even if you build it the day you pick it up. Last fence I built I had to replace 1 out of every 30 or so boards within the year. Inside would be better than outside, if you can keep the humidity up it shouldn't be too bad. If you stack it and put some weight on it you can keep it from bending to bad. Doesn't sound like you have enough to worry about the savings though. 120 boards or so. Prices are usually ok during the fence building season. Have you considered composite? No warp no stain.

I think I'll just buy drywall with it and pick up the lumber in the spring when I need it.

What type of lumber is this? If it's pressure treated, then definitely do not bring that inside.

But whatever lumber you get, some warping will occur no matter where and how you store it. Stacking it tightly is the best way to minimize it.

Best thing to do is wait, honestly. There will be enough sales come spring to match or come close enough to this deal that storing it for 4 months will be not worth it.

Strap all your lumber together. That should prevent a lot of the warping.

If it is pressure treated, then it is actually a really good idea to buy far in advance, and put the lumber in sheltered area to let it dry out. Pressure treated wood shrinks a whole bunch, it can take a year before it stops shrinking completely.

Yeah I heard bad things about wood warping. Might not save anything, or cost you more. I bought a few planks last winter and could only use a few pieces. But that's probably because I didn't make sure it was in a properly humid area.

You should definitely keep your lumber in your house. It's damn awkward to deal with in public:
