Default Obama proposes fee for Canadians traveling to US

Not sure how I feel about this? Is $5.50 enough to deter people from traveling to the US by air?

It'll work both ways.

A game our governments will play.

Frankly, I stopped flying to the US a couple of years ago. It's bad enough that they treat guests like we're all out to get them, but now they want us to fund the poor treatment?

The USA has got a lot of nerve.....

Yes, that would do wonders for the Canadian economy

How exactly are 'guests' treated like they're all out to get them? Because you have to go through immigration and customs? You know that's the case in every single country right?

Immigration and Customs has nothing to do with it. I disagree with much of the 'improved' security screenings that have been introduced over the years.

While screening has never a fun experience, I feel it's become downright aggressive and (to some) even humiliating. That's why I've chosen to stop flying (essentially visiting) the USA.

I brought this up in the "More Canadians Flying through the US" thread, as this is yet another fee that will make it more expensive to fly out of Canadian airports.

I dunno, I've found customs and security in the EU (Germany) to be much more friendly than what you get traveling to the US now.

For example, I loved how US security at Kahului, Maui made my 19 month old daughter remove her shoes to go through the x-ray machine. Seriously? Didn't have to do that in Calgary or Vancouver.

Don't worry Hoz, the budget can't pass unless it gets through Congress. The Republicans would never agree to something that is solely profit-driven and keeps foreigners out; thank God we can rely on the Republicans to keep that loser Obama at bay!

And you realize that Americans are subject to the same screening, right? I can get why you don't like the security, although personally I have never noticed a difference flying to Toronto or NYC in terms of security, but to make it seem like visitors are treated any differently is blatantly false.

Is that really a big deal though? People moan about everything. You had to remove shoes, sure it's a pain, but it's not a major issue. I support people who object to some of the most recent screening techniques, especially the aggressive use of pat downs, but objecting to the removal of shoes isn't something that should garner any sympathy.

Wow, touchy Hoz!

How will imposing a tax raise money? That's a tough one.

I think we should tax something they sell us if we want to retaliate. How about a tax on US TV shows or syrups for Coke/Pepsi/etc coming across the border.

Funny......I didn't suggest that visitors are treated differently. I said that I feel visitors are treated poorly and that I've chosen not to participate in it.

Here's some help: http://www.rhlschool.com/reading.htm

Well...

I am think'n

kill'n the goose that layed the golden egg-ish...ing

So when a government raises money it increases jobs .... right?

5 dollars will not stop people from going to the USA. The idea behind it certainly will. Eventually these types of people will decide that 400 dollars at the border is better than 10 million used at Vegas and taxes gained there.

239 dollars to go to Vegas and back will have a 1000's more people than 639.

YEs is 5 now......but it wont be for long

Meh, ...I would be more concerned about our government giving Homeland Security access to the private information of Canadians.
