I actually don't mind Ezra. I had a pretty negative opinion of him until I saw him speak out here a few months ago. Whatever you think of the guy's beliefs, he does a decent job supporting them with logic.
EDIT: And I say that as someone who usually leans on left side of things.

Levant, Salmaan Mansur (sp?) and Peter Worthington are the only columnists that are really worth while in the Sun publications.

I was lucky enough to be in the same business school as Nenshi and Ezra. Will be interesting to see the kind of attempt at profile raising Ezra does in the coming years to compensate Nenshi for leapfrogging him.

I think I may be in your boat entirely. I'm more left leaning that right (still pretty centered in that I despise aspects of both). I work on campus so his visit was discussed yesterday. I'm a little ignorant to his writing so I did some googling and found some articles that were actually fairly well though out.
He's said some pretty controversial things in the past I'm told. I'm interested in learning more about him.
edit - From wikipedia:
Quote:
Levant was an active political organizer in the Reform Party, and guided the successful attempts by Rahim Jaffer and Rob Anders to win party nominations.
|
Quote:
Levant worked with David Frum to organize the "Winds of Change" conference in Calgary, an early attempt to encourage the Reform Party of Canada and Progressive Conservative Party of Canada to merge so that a united rightwing party could defeat the Liberal Party of Canada in the subsequent election.
|
Quote:
A close friend of Stockwell Day's son Logan, Levant proclaimed himself a "Stockaholic"
|
Well ... there's three reasons I'd have a hard time getting to like him.

It's too bad for you that ad hominem attacks don't have any relevance to the discussion.

You didn't make a point. You just supplied an ad hominem attack. Where's the irony in me pointing that out? I don't think it's too much to ask for someone to debate the content rather than the person. The title of the thread is "Ezra Levant Talk at the U of C," not "What do you think of Ezra Levant?"

You can argue that he's a hypocrite, but that doesn't mean the content of his speech is necessarily wrong.

Yeah, I could actually see that. Dude's a little...eccentric.

Well, I'm telling you now what I think of "Newman."
His entire premise is a logical fallacy. The relevance of Canadian environmental standards and Third World Human Rights is about as incongruous as blaming the Flames power play on European soccer hooliganism.
It's all just a part of his schtick.

How is saying that money spent on Canadian oil goes to a government who enforces environmental standards and doesn't use the money to oppress it's people, as opposed to money that goes to the Saudis, where everything is the exact opposite, a logical fallacy?
