25 years ago today, Terry Fox dipped his artificial leg in the Atlantic Ocean and started what was to be a run across Canada to raise money for cancer research.

For more than four months, he ran the equivalent of a marathon every day. He stopped his run outside of Thunder Bay, when it turned out his cancer had spread.

The image of Terry Fox on the highway is one that has haunted me for 25 years, and it's amazing to see that we are still honouring his mission in 2005.

Quite possibly my favourite Canadian of all time. His courage lives on, no one could have predicted the huge turn of events his Marathon of Hope inspired.

Not to be a downer, but i still can't beleive that after 25 years and all this money, there is still no cure for cancer. What a stubborn disease.

Cancer treatment has advanced exponentially since Terry Fox's run. Many forms of cancer are curable.

Yeah I was thinking the same kind of downer thing but then I saw a segment on the news. Some kid who had had the same kind of cancer Terry Fox died from was playing street hockey. He had lost his leg as well but he survived due to the advances they've had in the 25 years. A doctor also said something like "if Terry Fox got the same disease today, he'd likely die of old age".

Also, 360 million bucks has been raised in his name. They don't have a cure yet, but wow, that guy has got to be the alltime champion for raising money.
