Default China's Planned Megacity. Population 42 million

What would they call it? Neo Delta?

Good luck trying to find parking or space for DimSum on a weekend.

http://en.mercopress.com/2011/01/30/...million-people

The plan has been dubbed ‘Turn the Pearl River Delta Into One’, and will see nine cities combined into an urban area two times the size of Wales. The area is located on the Chinese mainland north of Hong Kong and Macau and includes the cities of Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Jiangmen, Huizhou, Dongguan, Huizhou, Zhongshan, Zhuhai and Zhaoqing.
The area spans some 16,000 square miles and accounts almost 20% of China’s economy. Once merged, the heavily industrious mega city will comprise an urban area more than 25 times the size of Greater London.

I was just reading an article on this.

Also, in the future, they are planning 100m Mega-Cities:

Quote:
By the end of the decade, China plans to move ever greater numbers into its cities, creating some city zones with 50 million to 100 million people and "small" city clusters of 10 million to 25 million.

Yes, it's time for a real science fiction Megalopolis

They are building a ton of advanced rail transit in the area too connecting everything. I am a huge fan of megadense urban centers when done right. Hong Kong and Shen Zhen are actually quite nice and very modern and architecturally forward thinking and who have booming economies.

Dense cities suck for places in Mexico and India, etc. that are just big because of overpopulation and poverty though.

It really isn't a mega city in terms of stacked buildings filling up everything. Most of that area is actually still rural. It's more like a mega economic region with interconnecting services and mass transit.

Kind of like places in Northwestern Europe then, except they all speak Chinese.

Probably used pirated software to do the planning.

Boston down to Washington DC has over 50 million people

driving that stretch, you never feel like you ever leave the city

Ultra dense cities worry me simply because if someone was crazy enough to launch a nuke... that is a LOT of people gone.

Except that they will have highspeed rail linking all the cities and Hong Kong and Shen Zhen already have huge modern subway systems.

We can't even dig a trench in an airport runway.

Oh, and their taxi drivers and buses are awesome. They go at like 80 km/h even in cramped streets! Better than most Disney rides I tell you.

I seriously fear for my life in their taxis but it is quite a thrill ride. There you HAVE to honk every few seconds just to let other cars know where you are.

My inlaws just rode one of their new bullet trains in china. 450km/hour and it only cost $20 for a 600km trip.

Unlike the proposed high speed train between Calgary and Edmonton, I think high speed rail makes a ton of sense for a country like China. They'll have so many people using it that tickets can be cheap yet the system can still be sustainable.

Yeah is that the worst idea ever? once you are in Edmonton or Calgary you will need to rent a car for the rest of the trip.

Except the planning for a mega city is done to prevent something like this
