Default After the Olympic Tourist Rush (Sled Dog Cull)

Seems after the Olympics, dog sled tour operators didn't need the dogs anymore.

Quote:
WHISTLER, B.C.—An official of the SPCA in British Columbia says word of a slaughter of sled dogs in Whistler warrants a criminal investigation.

Marcie Moriarty, general manager of the group’s cruelty investigations, says the description of the April 2010 incident is an “absolutely criminal code offence,” although there is no indication a police investigation is underway.

Documents obtained by CKNW radio reveal about 100 healthy sled dogs were killed in a mass slaughter in Whistler last April 21 and 23.

According to the WorkSafe B.C. documents, an employee of Outdoor Adventures Whistler has been compensated for post-traumatic stress disorder after being ordered to shoot the animals.

The documents reveal bookings for dog sled tours collapsed after the Olympics and when the company could not find homes for its animals, it ordered the cull.

Outdoor Adventures Whistler did not contest the details in the WorkSafe documents except to indicate that the injured worker claimed to have killed 70 dogs, but 100 were actually destroyed.

The animals were bred for a specific purpose, and then killed when it no longer made financial sense. That's appalling. It's quite a bit different than animals bred for food or for pets.

If they can't give them away, what should they do with them? They were in a pretty tough spot in this case in my opinion.

Pretty digusting, not sure what the owner was thinking buying enough dogs that they'd become a burden after the inevitable slowdown. Guy should be banned from owning any animals.

I agree, but these people think that way, and are likely big time dog lovers.

If there was any justice in the world, the owners of the company should have been taken out back and "disposed" of

Theres got to be tons of better solutions than this.

I mean, if you cant give them to some sort of animal services organization and let them do it humanely (and legally) I'm sure there are better ways than having the company mailroom guy go out and kill them.

So the employee found the act so disturbing...so terrible... he had to file for compensation from the company...but still had no spine to actually say no to the act.

Gutless.

If they didn't have a plan for the dogs for after the Olympics, they shouldn't have gotten them in the first place.

1) Some jack ass of a guy sees the opportunity to make some big $$$ for the Olympics.
2) The same jack ass realizes business is slowing down after the Olympics and to cut costs you shoot the dogs???

In the corporate world such an act would turn the company upside down however this is most likely a small company and no one will remember his actions within a years time while he sits on some beach in mexico spending his "hard earned" money.

One of the more disgusting articles I have read in a while

PS: Don't tell me they couldn't find homes for them.... there are climates all over the world where sled dogs are used. Were such places searched or did this prick put an add on the local craigslist before giving up.

It is sad that they chose to kill all the animals.

What really disturbs me though is that they shot them. Why not hand them over to the SPCA?

My guess is that the SPCA would charge some kinda fee to destroy them...cheap "#$%# didn't want to dip into his profit I'm guessing

F-ing tards! Ridiculous.

I wonder how hard they tried to find homes for those dogs. I'm betting they were asking people to take the whole lot and not just 1 or 2 dogs.

Animal abuse laws need to be tougher here. Actually most laws are a joke. It pays to be a criminal in Canada.

Any chance the SPCA wouldn't have taken an entire pack of dogs?

It gets worse, they reported on Global BC that lots of the dogs had to be shot more than once, some had their throats slashed, and some were still alive when they were thrown into the mass burial pit.

Quote:
The radio station reports the dogs were either shot or had their throats slashed before being buried in a mass grave.

"It wasn't always a clean, one-shot kill," lawyer Cory Steinberg, who is representing the employee, told CKNW. "Inevitably, he ended up seeing and having to put the end to some horrific scenes."

i was just watching WW2 in HD yesterday when the nazis did the same thing.

Thats why the Nazis built gas chambers. All their men were having severe psychological problems shooting and burying people into mass graves.

Regardless, they probably could have helped them find a better solution than having Joe from sales take them out back and shoot them.

... but probably not cheaper, which I wager was a top factor.
