Don't mix protein powder with milk, it slows down the absorption. Water is the way to go.

Good to know. I am actually doing the opposite of the OP (trying to lose weight) but I need some sort of supplement after a workout to recover. I was recommended a low carb/fat solution and didn't need the extra calories in milk.
I think I'll grab something that isn't chocolate, and give it a try.

Why don't you just cook an egg and eat it? I could never understand why people would do that, there is just increased risks of salmonella and no health benefits and the taste is awful in comparison to awesome.

Not a shake, but there's a Men's Health - Belly Off program, breakfast that uses all of those ingredients and more that I really like. Great Saturday morning kick start.
Ultimate Power Breakfast
1 egg
1 cup low-fat milk
3/4 cup oatmeal
1/2 cup mixed berries
1 tablespoon chopped pecans or almonds
1 teaspoon vanilla whey protein powder
1 teaspoon ground flaxseed
1/2 banana, sliced
1 tablespoon plain yogurt
Directions: In microwave-safe bowl, mix egg well, then add next 6 ingredients and nuke for 2 minutes.
Remove, let cool for a minute or two.
Top with sliced banana and yogurt.

I wouldn't worry about the extra calories in milk, it's a non issue even if you are trying to lose weight.
I usually (almost always) buy chocolate powder as IMO it tastes the best with water. Right now I'm on Dymatize powder, and when mixed with water it tastes almost like chocolate milk. Almost. Champion Nutrition also tastes very good. It's more important to drink it quickly rather than taking a sip at a time for ages because you hate the taste of some bland mix with "fewer" calories.

why dont you just use the ingredients you listed above as part of your diet, and add in protein shakes post workout?
When i had to put on weight i used Mammoth 2500 weight gainer protein powder. It delivers approximately 1000 cal/shake..i think 50g or protein, which is obscenely high, i know..but i found gave me great results, and its quite delicious (chocolate flavor). Try Glutamine for post workouts as well (either in the shake or in some juice or something afterwards), add in some once a day multi-vitamins and workout hard.
I've always felt as though putting "good" weight on is really tough, it definitely requires a disciplined exercise and nutritional routine.

If you ingest 50 grams of protein after a workout about 3/4 of that is going to be released through your urine as the body can only handle X amount of protein. I will look through my physiology books but essentially there is little to no benefit to a lot of the really high protein shakes. You may say it has given you great results, but it is also possible that those results would have happened regardless. Past that 1000 kcal is a huge number for most people. Absolutely huge and I would imagine that there is a lot of fat and a hell of a lot of sugars, which are the last things that you should be eating post workout. Try and have some complex carbs post workout rather than processed sugars.

Ya, depending upon your body weight most people can't actually process more than 30 - 35 grams of protein at once. As Mr. Mustard pointed out you're going to just lose it in your urine. Your best bet is to try to get about 30 grams of protein every few hours.....

Better yet dont drink milk at all. Blend up some spirulina in a smoothie, more protein than red meat and soy all together. Plus the energy will keep you going all day long.

I have the Choc Mint for breakfast and the strawberry after working out. Best tasting shake I have found.
But... i am switching. The Syntha as good as it tastes has a bunch of ingredients in it that are not the healthiest and is 238 cals for 22g of protein plus high carbs. I am looking to move to either isopure or dream protein once i have used all my precious Syntha. From reading the ingredients the Dream has the edge at this point but I have heard good things about Isopure and it is more readily available.

Either way, I don't need the extra 110 calories.

A lot of research coming out lately indicating that the 'Body can only absorb 30 grams of protein' way of thinking may just be typical bro-science mythology.
I'm not saying I know for a fact either way and that one side is wrong. However, like everything in the world and especially the interwebs, frequent meals of 30 grams of protein may not be completely true .... or at least not the whole story.

I work out hard and I am maintaining my weight so for bulking I can't help you, but usually I have (in this order so it blends easily)
-banana
-frozen berries
-a tiny bit of milk for texture (or yogurt)
-a crap load of organic spinach (you can't even taste it)
-water
-pure fruit juice (expensive but worth it)
-flax seed
this is great not only after a workout but for breakfast, put it in a mug and you are off to work/school with nitro fuel for your body. I have tried protein powders, supplements and all that nonsense and have found that to get real results and a real solid looking body the absolute best way to go is to eat 100% natural foods. The more steps it had between being taken from the ground to you eating it the worse it is for you. You can bulk using many different methods but the difference is overall health.

Totally agree with this. Awesome tip that everyone should do. I use an entire blender full of spinach. Sounds gross, but literally has no taste.

You also get more protein from cooked eggs vs raw eggs.
