NCAA March Madness and BYU
Random question, I tried googling this for a bit this evening but wasn't able to find anything.
I seem to recall a few years ago that if BYU won their first round March Madness game then they would have to re-bracket the entire tournament due to the agreement that BYU doesn't play on Sundays.
Can anyone find anything to confirm this? Thanks

No idea.
I do know however, that if you are not married you cannot get laid and allow anyone to know unless married. As absurd a rule as any that have ever existed....and i respect the schools right to determine what they do.
Reality clashing with myopic hope IMO.

Don't know about the NCAA changing the schedule ... tbh I doubt it because there is just way too much money behind it.
But the last time BYU played a Sunday game was December 23 2001. So there might be something to it.

Considering that BYU wouldn't have been a top team it seems unlikely that they would have re-bracketed the whole tournament.
It would have been much easier to just place them in a pod that would have them play on thursday-saturday rather than a friday-sunday spot. They know which sites will play which set of games so that would have been a lot easier and made a lot more sense than changing the whole tournament.
Edit: Looks like the issue would have been if they made it to the elite eight, but even then I can't see them changing the game as that would affect so many things (TV, venue, tickets, other team etc.) Considering that plenty of Mormons play NFL on Sundays my guess is that BYU would have had to suck it up or forefit.

I totally agree with your point that BYU would likely have to suck it up...but the comparison...those NFL guys don't play for church operated teams.

There was an All-Blacks rugby player a number of years ago now who wouldn't play on Sundays.

Davies was kicked off the team last week for having sex with his girlfriend:

Athletes at BYU can't have sex, can't drink alcohol, can't have tea or coffee, can't swear..........

The athletes made a choice to attend BYU and were probably aware of the rules and how it could affect them.
Leave the schedule as it is - BYU would then have the right to participate or forfeit.

The year in question they were a lower seed, and thye would have had to make the elite 8 to play on a Sunday. I think the talk was that, had they made it that far, the bracket would have been switched around, but I don't remember the details. Thinking a little further, I think they were going to re bracket had BYU made the sweet sixteen, so BYU couldn't play on back to back nights, but they were beaten in the first round.

Thanks guys,
based on your input I was able to narrow down my google searches and found that it was 2003 and would have had to win their first two games before a switch would be made (not entire re-bracket) to allow for BYU not playing on Sunday.
Apparently there was an oversight which mistakenly put them in a bracket that could potentially have them play on a Sunday.

Thanks folks
